Shure Premier

I was looking on eBay for another headshell and found one with a Shure Premier cartridge with a new EVG 760-DED/Shure N75ED stylus. From what I could find on the web it appears that the Premier is simply a M75ED. Is that correct. Any opinions on this cartridge? I didn't need another cartridge but it was a really good deal. If nothing else it's good for testing used record purchases.
Thx

I have two of those with the yellow Shure ED stylus that came on old TTs I bought. Very enjoyable cartridge. I found I liked it more than I expected listening to old jazz records.

I bought a few different aftermarket tips for it last week but haven't tried any yet. Surely local Shure specialists can offer guidance but the basic cartridge seems pretty good to me.

Yes, it's identical in all except name. I suspect Shure re-badged a bunch of older model cartridges to get rid of them, by giving them a name suggestive of top-quality.

Quite good. In the early-70's the M75ED Type 2, and its twin the M91ED, which had the same performance, were equal second-best in Shure's line, behind the V15 Type II Improved. So with the original genuine Shure stylus, it had excellent trackability, and was one of the most reasonably-priced methods of improving the sound from many turntables. They also saw service as the official cartridges sold standard on many turntables around the world, including on brands like Dual, Garrard and Thorens.

So they sound good, with a quite flat frequency response, track well (assuming a reasonable quality stylus), and styli are readily available.

I'm looking for a replacement stylus for a Shure premier cartridge. The old stylus is black, but I think it's a 3rd-party replacement, so I'd appreciate confirmation that it's an N75ed. Pictures attached. Thanks, GarnetWard Shure premier 4.jpg Ward Shure premier 3.jpg Ward Shure premier 2.jpg

That is a Shure M75 cart. The best (available) Shure manufactured stylus that will fit on that is the Ne95ED stylus. It will look a bit different, being yellow in color, shaped a bit different........but it will play right up there with the N75ED type 2

Thanks very much marcmorin. Are you suggesting that I shouldn't go for an after-market N75ed type?

To get an aftermarket stylus to outperform the stylus I mentioned, you'll spend a good bit more. If trying to get by inexpensive, the EVG is decent enough, the Tonar branded, for a few dollars more is (imo/ime) a better stylus. The Jico is better yet, but then it's in similar money as the Ne95ED, and below the performance of it.

Well that is very interesting. A Shure Premier cartridge has always been a re-release of the M95 cartridge to me, and I have come to know that by everything I could read on the subject here on Audiokarma and on VinylEngine. I have a couple and they are definitely M95's. This one, labeled Premier, is definitely not an M95 from what I can see and compare. Can you tell an M75 from an M91 with no labels or anything else to identify them? I can't. Hmmmm. Larry (Mr. hackaplan), are you out there? Premier seems to be whatever Shure wanted it to be Premier at the moment. I wonder if these were just leftovers that were "obsolete" and that they wanted to rename so they wouldn't have to try to market an obsolete item with an obsolete name. I just received another Premier today, as a matter of fact. It is definitely the shape of an M95 and not an M75. It came with a light green stylus. Info in other posts here tells me that this is an M70EJ stylus, which was intended for an M75, but fits this Premier/M95.

I've seen both the M75 and M95 cartridge body types labeled as "Premier", and have one of each. There may have been a M91ED "Premier" version but don't recall ever seeing one. I'm not sure which styli offered with them but I would guess "nudies".

My understanding of the Premier line is that they are in fact rebadged older cartridges (or perhaps re-released) and can be identified by the colour of the original stylus, i.e. Premier Yellow is actually an M95ED, etc.

Now that doesn't help identify the bodies, and I'm not familiar enough with the M75 and M91 cartridges to tell them apart.

the plastic body mounting is the difference between the 75 and 91, and of course, you can't put a 91 stylus into a 75 body, but you can put a 75 stylus into a 91 body

You can put a 75 stylus into a 91 AND 95 body. Not sure about a 95 into a 75 body.

Premier Yellow is actually an M95ED, etc.

So was my light green stylus (M70EJ I assume) not the original stylus on my M95 Premier body?
From AK member in an older thread:
Premier Yellow - M95ED
Premier Black - M75ED Type 2
Premier Light Green - M70EJ
Premier Beige - M70B

Three different versions of the Shure Premier

1) same as the M75ED

2) same as the M91ED

Thanks! Pictures of the bellies would be worth 1000 words. :) I was looking at photos on google and I couldn't tell an M75 from an M91 if I didn't have something that spelled it out. Both seemed to have flat bellies/bottoms and the scalloped sides looked the same, too. I don't have an M75 (to my knowledge) to look at and my M91 is on something somewhere here. Know what I mean?
