JVC does not get much respect

If not for AK, I would never have taken JVC seriously from their mass produced 80 and 90s? items. It was confusing for me at first, to be introduced to some of the nicest and most highly reguarded Turntables and Speakers on these forums from JVC . AK has brought me total respect for JVC, and (SONY) likewise. I enjoy reading postings from the vintage era about these brands now.

Thanks, just curios how would the sound would be in AX-5?
This series of integrateds sound warm, extremely detailed, but are not hot or overly bright in the highs. Lots of power.
The most desirable of the series are the A-X5,7 & 9.

I am considering driving a couple hundred miles to pick up a JVC ax 900b. Should I?

Would I buy an AX-900B if I had one available to me? Probably. Would I drive 200 miles (one way? Round trip?) to buy one? Well, I guess it would all depend on what it could replace performance-wise. I would say if you think it will be better than something in your current collection, then it could be worth the effort to get it. But if it is just a sideways move (i.e. that it will be relatively on par with what you already have), then you may have to weight that consideration to see if it makes sense for you. TBH, there's really nothing wrong with driving all that way, but you just have to gauge if you think the reward will outweigh the time and gas money spent to get it. I bet it's a nice sounding unit though. ;) :)

Isn't it one of the best JVC amps? I've got a radio shack mpa 200, and adcom 545, and some 80s fisher amp. I want to hook up the ax900b to a pair of Electro Voice fr210 b's and a pair of EV Interface 3's. I have them hooked up to the Radio Shack amp now.

i've had a bunch of jvc over the yrs
we had a local dealer when i was young [ he's dead now rip ]
i currently have an a-x4
it sounds great

but..... i'll never forget some stereo magazine in the late 70's early 80's with a cover pic of a jvc amp
it had all the lights and meters and the pull arm of a casino slot machine
kewl pic .... a dis to some of their good stuff, but at one point jvc was about the bling
wish i could find that mag cover

A bit above average within the JVC line, but not the best they have made. But that doesn't mean it's not a nice unit, or one that isn't worth owning. JVC has made a ton of stuff over the years, both vintage and more modern pieces like the AX-900B, but there have been bigger and "better" pieces they have made over the years. It's all subjective though. I can't personally speak towards the AX-900B, as I've never heard one. Same goes for your Adcom GFA-545, which I would tend to think would be the challenger to the AX-900B. TBH, it's hard to say which one might be the "winner" (again, so subjective), as they'll both have a different sound signature. I think if you are looking for a different sound other than your Adcom, it might be worth it. But then again, that AX-900B is a long way away, so you'll have to decide if that potential change in sound is worth going after. It's a bit of a roll of the dice I suppose.

By the by its about 260 mile round trip. I am familiar with the quality and reputation of their hd video cameras. What I didn't know was about the history of the company. How I found this thread is because I was researching this particular amp and could find little info. I love these long threads, usually they're great reads and very informative. Yet about this particular amp, I either missed what I was looking for or am inept in my ability to find it. I am apprehensive about buying any electronics from the early 80's when, I believe, this amp was made. However the ability to bi-amp or run 2 sets of speakers through 1 amp, which I cannot do with the adcom 545 appeals to me. I owned a 2001 volvo v70 turbo wagon that was a total lemon, and I loved when it was running right, which was rarely. I guess more than anything I am asking about the the perceived build quality of this particular amp. It appears to be rare, so there are not a lot of reviews, although it high end Japanese Victor cousin is apparently loved. Any thoughts about any of this?

One of the reasons I subscribed was to learn. So to Bi-amp correctly I would need two separate amps with the same output? That's good to know. I only have one set of speakers (Electro Voice FR210b) that could be Bi-amped at the moment. I am sorry to crap on this great thread while exposing my ignorance, please forgive that indiscretion. I am more interested in the JVC AX 900b reliability and build quality. I hear its a tank, but that its rare. Is it rare to see one because they weren't very good and no-one bought them OR are they rare to find because they are indestructible and amazing and no one wants to get rid of them.

I have a few JVC pieces,

a JVC JL-F30 Automatic Turntable Belt Drive,

a JVC XL-M405 Mult 6 disc CD Auto Changer and

a JVC TD-W209 Dual Cassette Deck (1 Reversing).

All seem well built and perform very well. I hardly ever see any comments on JVC components.

Anybody else had good experiences with JVC?

Charlie
I am extremely impressed with JVC. I have a JVC AX 30 which i purchased second hand in 1988. It still works perfectly well and the flouroscent lamps still work perfectly.

I forgot about my XV-N50 DVD player that I'm using for audio. It replaced a Sony DVP-S7000. To me it sounds at least as good, and loads as fast as any player out there. I also like the slim profile and blue light. Very happy with this $11 purchase.
I just got one for a CD player, how's it holding up?

I haven't used it in a long time but it's funny you mention it because just yesterday I was thinking about rotating it back in. I remember it being a super fast loader as DVD players go, and sounding good. Let me know your impressions when you test yours.

A-X5. Thanks for speaking highly of this amp GD70! Dialing in the DC offset is fairly easy (adjust/tweek a couple pots on bottom with fingers while watching multimeter) with this amp. My first receiver/amp Ive actually been able to dial in DC offset and Ive tried on a handful of them. Your description is spot on. Keeper for sure- warm, detailed, and enough power for my needs. A conservative 70W is right and a nice larger piece of kit! (hehe Ive seen that word used here, like it, and had to try it out :))

Glad you grabbed it! Looks like it has the door too! The hinges are fragile and many broke and doors ended up getting lost over the years. Now, go find an A-X9! Listening to mine as I'm typing this hooked up to restored AR3's, superb sound!
Let's see more detailed pics when you get a chance. Congrats!
