Restoring a Pioneer KP 575 Car audio cassette player

Hi All,
Recently found in my garage a vintage 1979 Pioneer KP 575 car audio cassette player which looks complete and in a quite nice condition. I would like to restore it to use in my Triumph classic car as it takes a minimum of space. Just needs cleaning and have the belt changed. I have uploaded a service manual from "the military Wireless Workshop" and started disassembling.
Unfortunately, one of the channels is dead (R) and, not being a technician whatsoever, I do not know where to look to fix the problem. One of the small resistors in the amplifier must have blown up due to a mistake in connecting the power-in (common neg wire for both power-in and channel-outputs).
I have a schematic circuit diagram, but I'm afraid it looks rather chinese to me.
Could anybody help me spotting the fault and explain how to cure it.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,

Hugh.

This is just impossible to diagnose by remote control. You will need a scope to be able to chase the signal around and see where it stops.

Very possible that you have a blown-up output device, this used to happen quite often. If you end up needing a device, it's very likely that I have one. I have a lot of Pioneer car audio parts (except belts), so if you need something, PM me.

Hi Pacific Stereo,
Thanks a lot for the quick reaction!
I will try and find a radio technician to spot the problem, but I certainly will keep your offer in mind, should I need a specific part to solve it.
Only problem is we are so far apart (I'm in Belgium).
Many thanks again and best regards,
Hugh.

Hi Pacific Stereo or any other friendly Pioneer specialist(s),
I know it's been a long time, but I finally managed to start and make the KP575 sing. It' been completely refurbished, only one issue remains: the solenoid activating the head base advance mechanism is shot.
Does anyone have a spare one (CXP-026) to sell, or can tell me where to get a replacement?
Thanks a lot for your usual kindness and help!
Cheers,

Hugh.

Hi All,

Just a question about the KP 575.
Finally found someone to fix the solenoid (rewinding the coil).
Now the belt just broke.
Question: anybody knows about the section of the belt: should it be square or round?
My tech, who serviced (and salvaged) my KP 575 replaced the missing belt by a square section one: the wow was really terrible (Brenda Lee sounded like a goat).
I replaced the belt by a round one and it got a lot better and it's this one that broke.
The service manual seemed to mention a round 2mm thick belt, but all the illustrations show square belt pictures, and there is no other mention than the part n°: CNT072.
Can anybody lighten me about this?
Thanks in advance for your usual kind help!
Cheers,

Hugh.

Gday Hugh
Im only new to forum so apologies if Im sending this incorrect in anyway. I noticed it was a recent post.

I've just found one of these units in my collection of car parts. Thought I might be able to answer your question assuming mine is still in factory original condition inside. Upon opening ive checked the belt and can confirm it's round. Can't tell you what size it is.

I'm in Aust so a long way from you however i would assume all these units are the same.

Cheers

Hi Daz,

Thanks a lot for your reaction. I progressed a little bit since my last post.
I opened the beast (again...) and changed the broken belt with the one which had been replaced before (square shaped, 1.5 mm thick).
To my amazement, the wow has now reduced to next to nothing and the speed, too fast previously, has turned to the right one.
Only issue remaining, the reverse function doesn't work anymore.
Back to creeping under the dashboard and re-open the baby.
Will report back soon.
Many thanks again,

Cheers,

Hugh.

Hello Hugh, I have a Pioneer KP-575 and have a new belt for it - Can you please tell me which way it goes in?
Thankyou Colin.

Hi Colin,

You will find attached a scan of my service manual for the KP575.
Hope it's clear enough and that you can use it.
To reach the belt, you will have to disassemble the deck partially as per attached instructions.
Sorry I can't upload the whole SM.
If you're interested, you can always order the full one at the address mentioned at the top of the pages. Think I bought it there for a few €.
Good luck!
Cheers,

Hugh.

PS: mine has worked OK for a few months, but now I lost the left channel: shuffle but no sound... Probably a blown cap in the amp section, and I'm not too good in electronics...
To be left for a while in my "to do" list.
