What are you Listening To Right Now? - and more

David & David - "Being Alone Together" from Boomtown.

Speaking of Sheryl Crow... David Baerwald and David Ricketts were part of the Tuesday Music Club (actually, Baerwald was a co-founder) that took Sheryl in and launched her. Bit of bad blood between them and her in the end... I haven't brought myself to listen to much from her other than tunes on the radio because of it.

>>>>Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict<<<<

Huh. What a great mix-tape that would make! Nutty avant garde stuff with really odd or long titles! I'll contribute FZ's "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue" and "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" (both from the album "Weasels Ripped My Flesh"). Along the lines of the Pink Floyd thing, I suppose we could include Stockhausen's nightmarish musique concrete/electronic piece "Gesang Der Junglinge":

What else could we add in there?

GJ
You'd run out of room on the liner for all the titles.

That's just plain weird. Reminds me of John Cage.

"And some are wrapped in the linen so fine
And some like a godling's scion
But I was cradled on the twigs of pine
Down a lonesome mountain line

I lost my boyhood and found my wife
A girl like a Salem clipper
A woman as straight as a hunting knife
With eyes as bright as the Dipper

We cleared our camp where the buffalo feed
Unheard of streams were our flagons
And I sowed my sons like apple seed
On the trail of the Western wagons

They were right, tight boys, never sulky or slow
A fruitful, goodly muster
The eldest died at the Alamo
And the youngest fell with Custer

The letter that told it burned my hand
I smiled and said, "So be it!"
But I could not live when they fenced my land
Oh it broke my heart just to see it

I saddled the red, unbroken colt
I rode him into the day there
But he threw me down like a thunderbolt
And he rolled on me as I lay there

Now I lie in the heart of the fat, black soil
Like the seed of a prairie thistle
It has washed my bones in honey and oil
And it's picked 'em as clean as a whistle

And my youth returns, like the rains of Spring
My sons, like the wild geese flying
And I lie and I hear the meadowlark sing
And there's much content in my dying

Go play with the towns you have built out of blocks
The towns where you may have bound me
I'll sleep in the earth like a tired old fox
And my buffalo have found me"

This song (poem) says everything there is to say. If not in the lines then between them. It's all there.

If the rest of the lyrics don't give away what's giving him his smile, the judge's name sure oughta.

"When I woke up this morning, things were lookin' bad
Seem like total silence was the only friend I had
Bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down... and won
And it was twelve o'clock before I realized
That I was havin' no fun

But fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun

Last time I checked my bankroll,
It was gettin' thin
Sometimes it seems like the bottom
Is the only place I've been
I Chased a rainbow down a one-way street dead end
And all my friends turned out to be insurance salesmen

But fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun

Well, I sat down in my closet with all my overalls
Tryin' to get away
From all the ears inside my walls
I dreamed the police heard
Everything I thought... what then?
Well I went to court
And the judge's name was Hoffman

Ah but fortunately I have the key to escape reality
And you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
It don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
No I'm just tryin' to have me some fun
Well done, hot dog bun, my sister's a nun"
