I would try the phono stage in the A-S2000. Honestly I doubt you will get much better for any less than 200 - $300. A decent phono stage isn't expensive to build into an amp unless you want that last 7% or so of perfect SQ. Even stand alone models, Like my $120 MM/MC Tonar-Vinyline (AKA - Project Phono Box) does an excellent job. As the AS-2000 is one of Yamaha's higher end amps, I would expect it too will do a fine job.
The biggest advantage of a separate Phono preamp is it will allow you to move the TT much farther from the amp using the phono preamps RCA output instead of the cartridge. Especially if you are using a low output MC cartridge.
