What are you Listening To Right Now? - and more

About twenty-five years ago when I was in the annuity business, I became acquainted with a few folks in state politics due to some lobbying that would have meant an enormous increase in my personal income had the effort succeeded. Louisiana passed the same legislation, which made my counter-part in that state very large monthly checks for a year, and significant renewals for some years after. Mississippi lawmakers failed to pass it by a narrow margin, and my office and job died within a few months. Such is life.

However, during that time when optimism ran high, one politician's wife approached me and said, "Hal, I hear you are a classical music fan, and Daryl recommended I speak with you. The Symphony has an annual benefit coming up in a few weeks, and the Mayor's wife and I have been trying to come up with a name for the event. This year we are serving an evening meal while the orchestra plays, and that being new we want a name that includes both the meal and music. If you could give me any ideas at all, I'd appreciate it. We need to come up with it this week, so give it some thought, would you?"

It wasn't as if I attended concerts, nor was I exceptionally knowledgeable about classical music. Knew no one in the orchestra, could not name the conductor. But as she walked away, an idea struck me, and I said, "Regina, hang on. Something came to me just now - it's simple, and I think kind of catchy and gets the idea across concisely - how about Dinner in D Minor?"

"Oh, that sounds perfect! My, you are quick - Daryl said you think fast on your feet. If you think of any others, let me know, but I think we'll be using this one."

And that was how I came to name an orchestral concert in the capitol city that year. I was invited as a guest, but had other obligations and was unable to attend. Whether or not they ever used the title again, I do not know. My claim to anonymity complete, I can die a happy man.

An audio buddy of mine once remarked to me, as he perused my records, "You're a sucker for anything in D Minor, aren't you?"

Yep. Always was, still am, so naming the dinner came quite easily to me. Schumann's only violin concerto is in my favorite key, and is also my favorite concerto for the instrument. I love Bach's Harpsichord Concerto in D Minor, too.

The image above is just the first example I found on Tidal. Any real classical gurus out there want to recommend other recordings of the piece?

Bach's Toccata and fugue in d Minor is been one of my favorites. Minors are dark sounding. Cool story. Thanks for sharing a part of yourself with us.

I've never listened to it nor would I ever want to. The red vinyl disc is badly warped anyways. I was so appalled when I saw it that I just had to have it if only for the opportunity to show it to others. At first I was curious to hear just exactly what is on this album but then some things are better left unknown.

Ok, You had me curious. So I looked it up and low and behold there is a part 2. Yup, there is more then one. It is called Crying Demons. It was recorded by A.A. Allen and his Miracle revival ministries and you could get one for a $3.00 donation.

first off, the sax play is just superb. i like the organ play as well, it reminds me of being a kid and going into pipe organ pizza and listening to hall wale on the organ wile we ate pizza and swayed back and forth. love it. if i thought for one second i could have been this good i would have never stopped when i was a kid. to be honest it brings back a ton of my growing up years. A+++

Awesome review and very cool historic perspective. And btw it's always cool to mention pizza.

Yes, the word "concerto" has a italian origin . The plural of "concerto" is "concerti" in italian .In Italian the final word "s" is not used to indicate the plural. Some people use the final "s" to indicate the plural because in its language the plural of a word is defined by the final letter "s" .The use of the final "s" also belongs to languages of Latin origin such as Spanish so the plural becomes "concertos" . So, pay attention to the composer. if it is Italian, like Vivaldi or Rossini, the plural is "concerti" because they were designed and written in this way. If the Spanish is the plural is "concertos" for the same reason. In French the singular is "concert" and the plural "concertes" ..( in english you know better than me ), in german "Konzert" and "Konzerte" :)https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/concerti

Thank you, @Beau Geste.

hay g. l. how is the weather on the other end of the state?? how much ice???
Hi Jim,
Well funny you should ask that. We had -20 last night and my 5 year old furnace went out so now Im waiting on the repairman. We have had weeks of -0. Not much snow. But the ice on the lakes is good from all the cold. You know, these bright sunny days are cold. Other then that just typical Wisconsin winter. The older I get the harder it is to enjoy -15 and -20.

Some of this music is just irritating, but a lot of it is good. The provided notes are surprisingly extensive. Combat! was my favorite show for a while when I was a kid. Memories come back when you have not heard a piece of music for over 50 years. Vic Morrow was killed in 1982 in a helicopter crash during a filming session. RIP Vic.
