Cr-1000

Im picking up this beauty in a week and want to get ahead of the game in buying suitable speakers.
I realise there are a few threads covering this question but the answers seem to cover American speakers unavailable in the UK. So I’d be greatful if any UK forum members with the cr-1000 could recommend some or US for that matter with UK sold speakers. I’m presently considering the Tannoy revolution floorstanders. Do they make sense?

I had Tannoy V4 with it that are budget. Now I have Revolution 6XT, not that much difference, CR-1000 is very powerful for its ratings.
The problem with CR-1000 is that it is too loud even at lowest volume settings which may be due to the potentiometer they used for volume. The speakers do not have to be sensitive then but today all are sensitive. If you have money and space I would recommend Revolution 8XT. I suppose anything from Tannoy between budget and 6XT does not make sense so you could go for V4 if not 6XT. V4 now is replaced by Eclipse series.
Also if looks matters Tannoy Revolution XT go well with vintage. Other brands like KEF or QAcoustics now go for very modern plasticy looks.

Consider a basic health check (bias, dc offset, FR's in spec?) and some degree of refurbishment (clean switches, dry solder joints?, caps? problematic
transistors?) Expect a nice sounding amp.

Many thanks for your replies.
Yes I don’t doubt that it will need a service with a few capacitor replacements and I’ve also been considering the older Ruark and Castle speakers which from memory weren’t that sensitive.

Never heard of these but with this beast you will need 2x100W minimum
You will need to replace filter capacitors, they will be around 6500uF out of 10000uF. Then the four 220uF/80v I would recommend to replace most, not a must but these are more likely to leak underneath or be weak. Others will be ok.
Next in need of attention will be small tantalum caps, 1uF and 2.2uF.
And you may finish at this.

Sounds like good first hand advice^^^. 6500uf mains is very small, have refurb's a few CA-1000's. 10000uf should be the target.

Yeah, in the early 1970s Yamahas filter caps are used up. In vintage Marantz and Sony from the same period filter caps are like new.

Regarding giving the unit a service, cap change and bias check could anyone recommend such a person in the UK who specialises in the older Yamaha units?

Do you have basic tools? DIY skills? OK to say no, some people are not suited to work on electronics... The tasks mentioned are fairly easy. AK members
can walk you through it.

Aye MBZ I suppose it’s something I should consider given that I live in the back of beyond.
I have turned my hand to most things in life but anything to do with electronics is one I’ve avoided. Though I do have a multimeter and an unregulated soldering iron which I’ve used for very basic repairs.
I’ve just been talking to the telecoms guy at my workplace and he’s offered to show me and practice on some old boards. So yes I think it’s probably something I can do and thanks for the suggestion. I’ll be back for more advice when I get my hands on it and come up with a plan of action. Many thanks
