My first four come readily to mind and in order seen they are: 2001: A Space Odessy, Star Wars, Blade Runner, and The Matrix. The fifth is another story though and these are my contenders (again in order seen): District 9, Moon, Her, Ex Machina and Children of Men. I've seen each of these but once and will be watching each again to decide. I actually watched District 9 again a few nights ago and it's not going to be my fifth, but it's an excellent film. I'm thinking five will be either Children of Men or Moon.

The Russian take on Lem's tale is much better than the American. Must be a Commie thing.

You must've gone to a school that taught New Math.

District 9 was really out there and semi disturbing. Both times I watched it, I wanted to turn it off but couldn't.

It's hard to imagine a list without 2001 A Space Odyssey on it - look at how many movies were made after which were obviously influenced by it, Passengers being the most recent example.

The Matrix
The Matrix Reloaded
2001 A Space Odyssey
Back to the Future
Star Wars

The first and third Transformers movies were also pretty epic and the sound over the top.

Speaking of District 9, I recently watched Chappie, which is the latest from the same director. Although it was pretty much panned, I thought it was really good. I especially liked Shartlo Copley's voice and motion capture work for the title character. He was also the lead in District 9.

Another I really liked was The Edge of Tomorrow. Sometimes Tom Cruise does really good Sci-Fi.

Sorry this isn't a list... I'm not good a lists.

I like ones that are unique like The Matrix, Aliens, Terminator 2001 etc. Also, I appreciate the oldie classics that paved the way like The Day The Earth Stood Still, War of the Worlds, 20 Thousand Leagues, The Time Machine, The Blob etc.

Hard to pick just 5, but...

The Time Machine (2002)
The 5th Element (1997)
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
12 Monkeys (1995)
Kronos (1957)

Stalker_poster.jpg Theflyposter.jpg Gattaca.jpg

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
STAR TREK (I take them as one series of a great movie)
BLADE RUNNER (1982)
STALKER (1979)
THE FLY (1958)

I know you want only 5, but I love the following very much too:
GATTACA (1997)
TOTAL RECALL
ALIENS (the first one)
THE MATRIX
INCEPTION

2001
Alien
Star Wars
Matrix
Metropolis

Loads of classic science fiction films that I like + honorable mentions to:

The Thing From Another World (great comraderies and real dialogue in the crew)
Dark Star (John Carpenter’s project as a student - hilarious low budget film)
They Live (best fight scene in SF film, ever)
Galaxy Quest (ah, c’mon! Do I need to mention why???)
