This is Will, my 5-1/2 year old Skinny assed 40#, soaking wet in Winter clothes (think Ralphie's little brother in a Christmas story) Grandson. He did a 2 night sleep over Thursday thru Saturday (29 to 31 MAR18).


So I'm changing my main system around (x-101-B to 800c) and he plugs in my Pro-4AA's and asks me to turn the 800c on. I do so and the 1st song is Van Halen's "Right Now". Oh yeah, so I swapped laptops to the one I had all my CD's ripped to, and started him on "Doobie's Choice", BS&T, Chicago, DSOTM, Limelighters, Kingston Trio, etc. He stayed with it for almost 6 hours and fell asleep, so I turned it down to barely audible. He woke up to a PRO-4AA Neck! LOL! So I decided to find him something a little lighter.


So I rooted around in my CRAP STACK (Frannie can be contagious at times) and found a set of lightweight SONY over the ear Headphones and gave them to him today at his house. Oh man you'd a thought he was in the World's largest Candy Warehouse and it was ALL FREE!!! He made his Dad and me get his FISHER 160-T, FisherTurntable and the Minimus 7's down and hooked it all up in his bedroom. He couldn't eat Dinner fast enough and when I left 2 hours later he was still be-bopping on the bed to Classic Rock thru the phones. I think I made his day. But didn't have my camera over at his house. These were taken Friday afternoon.

I'm gonna stuff some Harry James, Count Basie, Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Dorsey Brothers, et all down his throat 1st. It's Big Band Season at Casa DePop, and Glenn's leading the Pack! It's 1939 @ the Glen Isle Casino, and Moonlight Serenade is onthe top of the Lists.

Have a copy of Benny Goodman's 1939 Carnegie Hall concert? Thats a good one, especially Sing Sing Sing. Not sure when drum solos became a thing, but thats the earliest example that comes to mind. Gene Krupa was the man.

That's before my time, but I've heard of him, (krupa) may have to check that out. I love good drum solos, imho nobody tops the grateful dead, with 2 drummers simultaneously!

Damn. If only you had been around when I was 5½. Would have saved me years of hunting. Neat thing about Hemispheres is that you can slide in Farewell To Kings as a prequel, similar to reading The Hobbit after Lord of the Rings.

Cool photos, OP. I think exposing kids to music is the best thing you can do for them.

Krupa could do Magic with a 4 drum set and a couple of cymbals. I've got a copy of Goodman's World Concert in Russia in '58. Sing, Sing,Sing still sounded great. Plus a 5 lp limited edition Glenn Miller in White leatherette. Got some really great stuff on it. Movie Soundtrack of Sun Valley serenade with the long versions of Chattanooga Choo Choo, and I've got a gal in Kalamazoo. That'll get the blood boiling. Got some Artie Shaw too.

Then theres Sinatra with Basie, orchestrated by quincy Jones in 66-67. And a lot of Sinatra from the 50's and early 60's. Mills Brothers, a Few Virgil Fox on Organs(incl Heavy Organ with Light Show now THAT was a concert!!!!) all over including the organ at the Riverside Church in 1960.

Boy...The Beatles sure knew what they were doing when they set out to write a children's song, didn't they?

My Grandson is 2 and I found him this and some Beatle 45's

We play records in his playroom whenever he's over.
He's going to be 3 in August and guess what? Yellow Submarine is hitting the theaters in August in honor of it's 50th Anniversary.

Can you say Allmann Brothers? Sure you can ! But yeah, this here Deadhead (60's and 70's only though) appreciates the syncopation with 2 drummers and a rhythm section that takes syncopation to the utmost levels. For drummers, you gotta try the drummers in Zappa's bands and Jazz FUsion bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra. And for near-perfect production rock that sounds great on these receivers, try Steely Dan and Toto.

Yeah, I love the way the Dead's improv takes me to musical places I've never been. I would argue that a lot of that borders on Jazz. I've always had a hardon for "Live Dead" side 1 (Dark Star).
