I would connect both speakers. It’s my understanding that tube amps should have a load on all channels.

NO LOAD on a tube amp is a Death Knell for Output Transformers. If you don't have a 2nd speaker, put a dummy load (8ohm 50W resistor) across the spkr leads.

I added a second speaker within a minute or two I just wanted to see if I got any sound at all when powered up prior to moving forward.

But thank you both for that info, I was unaware of that cautionary tale.
