Just read that. Was going to post and you beat me to it. Good job! I sure thought the QLS came out before 1976 though.

Odd that he didn't mention the QRS, since that was probably the first "ultimate" line source from Infinity.

ETA: after poking around, looks like the QRS came out after the QLS. Maybe Mr. McGowan will mention it tomorrow.

According to the info on the Infinity-classics.de site, both the QRS, and the QLS-1 were released in 1977. Of the classic Infinity speakers I’ve heard, my favorites are the IRS V, and the Reference Standard 1b.

This ad implies that the QLS came first:

So it does, but the timeframe is clearly 1977/78. The Quantum’s were replaced fairly quickly by the Reference Standard line
This is true; however, there do seem to be many more entry level Q (e.g. Qa, Qb, Qe) series than entry level RS (RSa, RSb, RSe) series in the wild (judging by listings).

Those panels with sub and box ....are those Infinity? I've never seen them before.

Those were the speakers that launched Infinity, their first product, the Servo Statik 1A (actually, the Servo Static 1 came first). The local HiFi dealer (Woodland Stereo) said something like “OMG! How many of these can you make?” The reply was: “These cost as much as a brand new Volkswagen. Do you really think you can sell them?” And the rest is history.

All of the top Infinity speakers after this were just variations on the theme, thin membrane dipole radiators and servo-controlled bass.

I've read that before but anything I've ever seen was the 2000 or 2000a shown with the separate servo woofer. I've been under that assumption it was the first speaker. Those pictured in the link must be ultra rare?

The Servo Statiks were in production until 1977.(nine years), so they sold a fair number of them. But they were unreliable. The Infinity folks were classical music people, and didn’t come to grips with rock being played at party levels using their speakers for a few years. You never see them for sale & my guess is that’s because so few of them are still operational.

I heard both the original SS1, and the pictured SS1A, and they were awesome sounding amazingly accurate speakers. The KLH 9 were the only contemporary speakers that came close, but the SS1s had better dispersion and much better bass.

Sure enough, I've read from the Infinity history many times and it never registered what I was looking at. Those would be awesome to hear.
