Thorens Td160 build

Hi Euromut,

Amazing job with your Thorens! I have been some making similar modifications to mine and noticed something on yours. The spindle for the record looks taller in the last photo. Is this just an optical illusion or did you change something there? If that change is possible I would like to know.

Thanks

Thank you.

No change, In the final picture its just without any additional mat. I don't think the spindle can be moved within the sub-platter. Or if it can, I doubt it should be.

And then I went and took a copper bath.

Wow. You’ve done exactly what I’ve been researching. Bolivian Rosewood base with Audiomods arm. I’d given up on the idea for the moment but seeing this has kicked off the research again.

It’s gorgeous!

With regards to the Thorens Tables. Are most a good candidate for upgrades? Eg would a 150 be able to be modified to sound great too or is the 160 the pinnacle?

I have modified both and both are candidates for great upgrades. The TD150 uses a armboard similar to the TD 125-126 series which allows more flexibility in arm selection. Neither table modified is a slouch! IMHO
Regards,
Jim

After moving to a new house, I am getting some hum. I am going to be adding a separate ground lug (as some of you already suggested). I modified the housing for a Neutrik RCA, 3D printed an insert to adapt it for a 4mm Banana Jack. I'll be mounting it inline, to the right of the existing RCAs.

Wow!
Really beautiful tables!
I found this at a thrift store today for $4......:yikes:
Time to get my vinyl game on!
I haven't played around with it in decades.

So this project went dormant for quite a while. Access to friends shops due to Covid, slowed my down a bit. I had to buy some tools to get it done.

Decided I could do better. So I tore the whole thing down again.

I swapped out the top plate with one from an earlier, near perfect TD160. This time the top plate got fully stripped down and treated with Dynamat. Fully serviced the controls. And yes, this time around the Audiomods arm will have Q-up controlled via the knob.

I also had to put a jog in the speed control arm. This is for clearance on a custom sub-Plinth brace I am building.

I am close to the point where I can re mount the arm.

The brace is 1/16" G10 (Glass reinforced Phenolic Resin) with a 1/2" spacer made of closed cell foam. This will create an I-Beam stiffener for the sub plinth (Rega ish), trying the tone arm tube (24mm Carbon Fiber) to the 3D printed spindle cage.

Very nice indeed euromut! May I ask where you sourced the Thorens badge from? I will be building a new plinth for my 160 and would love to add that badge.

Nice thread nice work I own a 147 every time I see a thread like this I start to kick myself for not having it set up yet, but times are starting to change so I should be able to get to the shop for what I need to get it in action.

Thank You all.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the source for the Thorens Logo. I am pretty sure I found it on eBay from Switzerland. I see some, but not made like mine. Mine is Chrome Plated Brass.
