I like to save up earmarked audio funds for something nice. From meager disability income, I am yet able to save a goodly amount each month, most of which goes into a savings account, but beyond that I am still able to build up a nice amount over time which goes into my audio kitty, since we are debt-free. And since my needs are few.
Lately, I've had a remarkable run at the local casino poker table that has built it up more quickly 5han I anticipated. And audio is my only hobby. I have speakers on the brain.
Someone in North Carolina has a nice pair of ADS 1290 for sale at a friendly price, and if they were nearby they'd be at my house now. However, I greatly prefer something new because even a recap is a problem for me these days with a large, heavy speaker. Besides, the list of audio projects here will already have Christine and I very busy for awhile after she retires in a few weeks.
I need a new pair of speakers less than I do another hole in my head, but this isn't about need - it's merely about playing with toys.
Now I've already ruminated about this in AKer Judas Priest's new speaker thread, but decided to start my own in an effort to seek opinion/comments.
I've wanted panel-type speakers for years, and have been thinking of the Maggie 1.7i model. However, placement would only allow two feet between the speaker and the wall behind it, leaving less than three feet to the walls either side, with only five feet of separation between L&R speakers. The slim Silver 6 do very well with this placement, allowing more separation between them and I fear the Maggies might find it too compromised, too cramped, leaving me bereft of any real upgrade sonically. My seat is a good twelve feet away.
Furthermore, if I tried the Magnepan, and find them wanting due to these constraints, I'd still have very similar placement issues for use in the bedroom. Furthermore, while I feel certain the Levinson in the den would drive them, no sweat, I feel it likely that the Yamaha A-S500 would not, and I don't want to replace it because it has other features I want to keep. If a speaker supplants the Silver 6, I feel confident the Yamaha would do a nice job with them back there.
On top of that, the 1.7i would be too tall to fit my décor.
Which leads me to another speaker that caught my attention when I chose the MAs - Bryston's Mini-T.
Well-heeled audio enthusiasts refer to the Mini-T as an affordable, high-end entry-level sort of model. I understand what they mean, but to me they are quite expensive. Good reviews, good specs, able to do SPLs higher than I'd ever listen. Small three-way model, and I find the size appealing because I like to place my main speakers atop powered subwoofers.
No chance I'd ever get to hear them before buying, and few here (if anyone) seems to have heard them. And it would be a month, maybe two, before I could buy those, depleting the kitty entirely.
I've also found the LS-50 alluring - at least for the bedroom. I'm not convinced they'd displace the MA Silver 6 on the main rig, and I want something that has a shot at that.
Those ADS are looking better by the minute. I wouldn't be able to put them atop subs, but they may not need them anyway, or I could place them to the sides. Moot point, though. Too far away.
And I don't need any potential projects, either.
And yet one other speaker I've found attractive is the Silver 100 bookshelf model, for the bedroom. A largish (by current standards) two-way with an eight-inch woofer priced similar to the LS-50. Sexiest-looking tweeter extant, imo.
Given all these placement issues, and assuming new speakers only, what would you consider? No vintage models, please, unless you know of an excellent, fully restored specimen near OKC. Let's say three grand. Or would you simply keep saving and issue a BOLO?
Or since I like the 6 so much in this room, just upgrade the bedroom speakers?
I've owned many, many Klipsch models (and liked them) but this is about trying something different, so don't rec them. Which gives me pause concerning the Silver 100. I saw someone offering the LS-50, but I could buy new for his ask on the used ones by the time shipping is added on, and during the recent holiday sales, less.
I was never a big JBL fan, but I really only heard a few models, and not their better ones, either. And that back in the 70s.
Decisions, decisions...
