Hpm-150 & Hpm-1500

Got the 1500's refoamed today.

Now the fun can begin!

I looked up a 15" TAD driver. Cast, new AlNiCo. 800 clams each... :sadwave:

The foams are breaking in nicely. Not sure if I should remove the port stuffing pads; it's not in the SM so it must've been added, right?

Following views are nowhere on the web! :thmbsp:

First one, I set the top section on its side to see in the cavity with the smaller drivers and Xover. I replaced the push-in-stick-in binding posts.

Nice that they turned the coils to reduce unwanted interaction. And the bolt for the large one is aluminum. And those green caps; cool. Only one electrolytic Elna.

Pretty sure they sound better with the top screens/glass off. But the VC lead wires are exposed and too easy to snag so they get covered.

Hi,

I am new in this and lack experience! I have some questions:

If I find a HPM-1500 or 150, you know after all these years, could it still perform like new? You know, the magnets (for example) loose their strength with age; and stuff like this.

And, how can one be sure the speaker is not manipulated and sounds like original. How do professional vintage buyers find that out?!

And, does anyone know about the price range for this speakers in mint or near mint condition?!

I live in Toronto! I think, it would be hard to find these in Toronto! ... :tears: The speaker looks extra cool and I want one!

Ceramic magnets are pretty stable. The AlNiCos can sometimes take a remag to spruce them up though.

Worst is if somebody yanked out the orignal drivers, and replaced with whatever junk that seemed to fit.

I don't claim to be a pro anything but look to do:

  1. Grills
  2. any controls or switches
  3. Foam surrounds
  4. recap (sometimes)

I also like to put new binding posts in--spring clips just barf. :puke:

JBL 4312A vs. HPM-150/1500

Are you familiar with JBL 4312A studio monitors?! I need to know, how does the sound of these JBL beauties compare to that of HPM-150 or 1500?

Good thing about JBL 4312A studio monitors is their very dry and accurate sound. I love the sound when I play it with my Marantz 2330B. I believe a combo of HPM-150/1500 with a Pioneer SX-1980 will be very interesting too. :scratch2: I don't know if it would be better though! However, the sound should be much more huge, I guess!

What about HPM-150 vs. HPM-1500?!

I have one pair of HPM 150's and one pair of 1500's
Powered by Marantz 2500 and a Sansui G9000
or the Pioneer Spec1/2 and the Marantz 2500

Any set up and the 150's sound deeper, the 1500's sound brighter
Together, they are awesome
all on speaker stands

After a 14 hour round trip, these 150’s are home. Look better than expected when I got them into better light. Any idea on cleaning up these woofers? Surrounds should be here Saturday.
