Since David Lee and I both share the same last name, I have to go with Roth. However, even if I had a different last name my choice would still be DLR.

Band might have been more interesting if they had been an instrumentally-oriented ensemble, a "Ventures" of Hair Metal, if you will.

Wow... and I thought VH had some sweet instrumentals... but a whole album of them... that would be cool. I guess I'm going to have to make one. I always thought of Van Halen as Eddie anyhow...

I like both major iterations of Van Halen - Roth era and Hagar era - equally for different reasons. Also, I'm not entirely ashamed to admit I bought Van Halen III (Gary Cherone's one and only album as front man) on release day.

The Red Rocker has always done a fine job, but DLR is really a tough act to follow, his stage presence (especially in those early VH videos) was mind-boggling....

( "Gary WHO ????") :)

lets see it..
While Sammy Hagar certainly brought his own style and flair (I met him one time while I waitressed at the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi years ago, and he was a complete gentleman), I have to say that Roth's voice is so uniquely central to the Van Halen sound for me. So yes, it has to be Roth (not that I dislike Hagar). :)

It's all good. Saw Roth on the first few tours I, II, Fair Warning and Diver Down. Only saw Van Hagar once, this free show in Dallas.

I was at the 1984 concert at MSG. Only time I got to see them. Still have one of the black VH balloons the dropped on us. And of course, years later, smoked a bone with DLR in Washington Sq Park.

Roth was such a experienced musician... you can tell when he straps on a guitar... SCREAM! his talent is vocals.... and really , what are his vocals...

* at least Sammy is multi-talented.... just sayin'... I've been to at least 20+ VH shows both Roth and Haggar..

Well, Roth wasn't necessary a musician as much as an entertainer. And his vocals blended perfectly with that band. It just worked. As far as guitarists go, I recall Eddie was pretty good. Dave didn't really need to play. Just sayin.

You're right. VH is Evh. The only time I didn't like Eddie was when Gary Cherone was at the mic... that was Extremely wrong.

When I think Van Halen I think David Lee Roth. Not Sammy Hagar.
And when I think Montrose I think Sammy Hagar and not David Lee Roth.
It's as simple as that.
