  • I agree with you completely :) It seems, in audio today, with the "advantage" of hi-tech computer modeling etc, many, including those who appreciate older equipment "demand" that ultimate in specifications, resolution, and "perfection"? I have had a lot of people privately ask me what my "deal" is in preferring older speakers, and fixing them. My simple answer, is that to me, they (especially the KLH) just sound more "musical" than many of todays setups. I like you never get ear fatigue with the 17's or 6's, and never have the urge to turn them down.. With them, the sum outweighs the total of the parts so to speak. And right now, I would love to do some listening being Saturday and all, but have to go to work for a few hours.

Take care, it's been great chatting with you, and feel free to PM me anytime:)

Another thing too. No matter how nice a speaker is, I'm with you on the tweeter having to be comfortable......does it have you going over and turning the volume down a bit lower than you like, or just shortening you listening session? Big rooms are more forgiving for this (but not where my 17s' reside and they make that room a go to spot.....damn the other setups). Butteeeeer!
There's more than one sound that is balanced and oozes quality huh? Well designed early speaks can just shout it. I do appreciate peoples tastes progressing to narrower expectations on what "better" is, but to me it is not always about detail but the whole package of sound a system delivers, and those 17s' blew me away with that "luxury" going on.

Sorry to hear that..:( I do enjoy them, they do things "almost in all ways" as their bigger brother the 901's, without having to have the EQ. Good tight deep bass with the twin 8" woofers, and the highs are all around with equal sweet spots everywhere it seems. Mine are actually sitting along side my computer area "looking" at me, as I am currently fiddling with some old Realistic Mach 2's. I have waay too many old speakers lol :)
Unfortunately I never was able to get replacements for them(ended up selling them as is).Glad to see you enjoy your 601's!

Hi Dave, nice find on those Optimus 5's. Mine improved a lot with a recap and cleaning the pots. I found them to be a warm and nice sounding speaker. I remember doing a speaker shoutout with them some time back and recall they performed quite well against my other speakers. I think I documented the whole thing in a thread here.
Hello Dave! I noticed H.M.S. Malaya is your avatar. She was the 'Big Gun' escort for my fathers convoy early in WW II. He served in the Canadian infantry (North Shore,New Brunswick Regt.) for the duration. Cheers !!
