  • Great idea for getting to the daughter boards, thanks. It looks like the only way to get to the two tantalums on the tone control board is disassembly though -- agreed? Back on the Main boards, some of the transistors look rode hard and put away wet. Is it worth the effort to desolder and check them for volt leakage, or is this a case of "either they work or they don't"? Thanks!!
The 2SC458 compalint was noise, can't say I have ever noticed it. Someone suggested a 2N sub but you have to watch the basing. Incidentally on the board with the tone controls there is actually only two electros on that board, all the reast are on daughter boards. Now you could take out the tone board by half disassembling the 2020, or you can unsolder the daughter boards, replace caps easily, then solder them back. There are five daughter boards, two of one variety, three of another.
    Matt,

Tantalums do tend to look like little hot air baloons and they are polarized, so there should be a + on the circuit board. Best would be to get the schematic to see exactly which are tants. Ceramics are always roun flat disks. Poly caps are usually oblong rectangular shapes and need not be changed. You will find all four types in the phono amplifier section at the back of the tuner board, just change the electros and the tants and you will be fine.
Matt, I don't recall every lighting up the dial of a 2020, just replacing the lamp in the dial pointer.
