  • Hello: I’ve been having some bias issues on my ST-70 and I’m considering trading my amp that has a triode driver board to a fully updated ST-70 with a two tube driver board that’s configured for a pair of 6gh8a tubes. Will I notice a big change in the sound the amp puts out? Or, option two is to have my present amp repaired for a little less money. Thoughts, suggestions? Thanks!

Personally, I put the Triode Elec. driver board in my ST70 back in the early 1990s. I think it make a lot of sense because you are no longer are restricted to using a pentode/triode tube as the front end.

Breaking out the functions of the voltage amp and driver tube into two separate tubes makes considerable sense. In fact there are a number of much better sounding tube one can use if the user is willing to experiment. I used the EF86 and the 5687.
