Coming out of lurking to represent those who can't live with just one setup.
upstairs:
Garrand sl95b
Sansui TU-s7
Denon DCD-520
Nikko Beta II
Nikko Alpha II
Wharfedale Glendale XP2*
Big sound, small package. Everything but the Alpha II was broken in one way or another. the surrounds on the XP2s had peeled almost off the baskets, two broken tweeter leads. the Beta II had a relay to be rebuilt, the cd player needed a tray motor. the tuner's antenna jack had been cut(!) off. The garrard had the standard grease issues. The Alpha II is perfect in every way. never overheats, always looks cool.
*I had been running a pair of Klipsch kg4.2, but they seriously overloaded the wife's tolerance circuit and i was forced to hastily remove the "pair of giant black monoliths from that 2001 movie". No amount of arguing that bigger is better, or that little horns are for wimps would sway her resolve.
Down in the cave however, things get a bit more serious.
Tascam 112 MKII
Yamaha CDC-635
Adcom SLC-505
AudioControl D-520
Hafler p500
Dahlquist DQ-10s
I've had this exact setup for almost 20 years. I've swapped in and out countless parts, yet i always return home. Wasted time auditioning active preamps, they just don't work here. DQ-10s are sequential #'s & factory mirrored. Bought from goodwins in 96. Refoamed the woofers and i've new 82uf caps en-route now. aside from that and one 47k resistor in the p500, everything is as the day it was made. Active preamps make the Hafler even more boomy, and there's really no adjustment needed in the top end of the DQ-10s. The slc-505 is a well kept secret. The Hafler/Dahlquist pairing is a match made in heaven, if you've never experienced it, you're missing out.
There's also the car i suppose...
Pioneer DEH-p610bt
Alpine 3339
A/D/S p640.2
vifa xt25s
diamond 6.5"s
and a good ol' 10" kenwood tornado sub (which really suck unless they're in a properly tuned ported box at max cu, then they just mostly suck...)
Probably a bit overkill since 99% of my car listening is NPR, but the stock stereo was just horrible...
