SWEET JESUS ...
It was like being in the Smithsonian for just a moment; I swear these babies were pulled straight from a time capsule. As I approached my “date with the Lansing Sisters” I was greeted by a fellow AK member (Aaron99), who must have spotted the slobber on my chin. “AK member”, he stated as he shoved his hand out: I immediately knew, I was in a warm safe place. Holy cow, as advertised they were mint. We sat and listened to 3 minutes of Elton John, before I took matter into my own hands. I first threw on Steely Dan and got what I pretty much expected from a set of corner horns; set straight forward and 4 feet apart. The mids a bit squawky – as you pulled yourself into the driver’s seat of the single chair posed in front of the sisters, the horns focused and the pleasure started to flow. Power? A vintage Kenwood integrated …. YEP! Levinson 27.5 sitting on the floor, Modwright signature just underneath and plenty of tubes in the house but it was nice to hear them with something more challenging. That being said, a set of Mac 60’s would have been more fitting. These beasts needed to be tamed. We burned though 5-6 songs before Kurt (the owner) broke free to give us the real demo. He adjusted the mid and treble then put on some vintage jazz – damn amazing. Late 50’s jazz mix, then a Muddy Waters blast; it was really pleasing. Where they my holy grail? No, not so much but if I was a rich dude looking for a museum quality piece that could sizzle with some Miles, Coltrane or Brubeck they would be the real deal. Again, without tubes, a corner and 8-10 feet of separation it’s a tough call. I’m a rocker, so horn loaded super efficient classic speaker’s may not fill the gap in the giant hole in my soul that I throw audio gear into – and yet, still, I want them. No, I mean - I WANT THEM !!! They are huge, beautiful and everything not Chinese (no offense intended). They look like they weigh a ton and for good reason. The build quality oozes from the cabinets and ANYTHING from 1959 that still works as well as it did in its hey-day is an enigma.
Mr. Pig, if you can demo these speakers, would love to hear your thoughts!
Folks, this was a pleasure, which I hope everyone in the Portland area gets in on before they get snatched up by a Microsoft Millionaire. Classic design and attention to detail that just isn’t the norm anymore. Would love to get Arron99 thoughts; as I tend to be slanted towards soft dome mids and long walks in the sand.
Ok, ok shut the hell up and show up pics!
