TPA 3116 vs the tripaths

I'm interested but reluctant to try the EVM boards which discounted would still cost considerably more than the Volt+.

If I needed the extra power it might be a different matter but all my speakers are at least 93dbs.

I wonder if anyone has compared the Volt+ SQ to these EVM boards?

After letting this thread get me hooked on these things, I've tried several and currently have both the Volt+ and the TI 3250 evm. They're both very good but different. To me, a comparison of the 2 would give the Volt the edge in smoothness. Sometimes I find it almost too polite. The 3250 is more aggressive. Cleaner and more dynamic with notably more "punch". These were compared with the same preamps and speakers. I've been listening the 3e-audio 3251 for a while as well and like it very much. It has the same sound signature as the TI 3250 but is more powerful with some of my more difficult speakers.

That pretty much sums it up (and spookily matches the amps I have). Although I have the Volt, rather than the Volt+ (the Volt is the RPi HAT version, no volume control, or RCA input). It is easily the 'best' of the TPA3116/3118 amps I have used.

I have 3 sets of speakers; Mission 760 standmounts, Q Acoustics 3020 bookshelf, and Q Acoustics 2050i floorstanders. The Volt drives the Missions and 3020s just fine, but is overshadowed by the 3250/3251 when driving the 2050is. I'm currently using the 3e-Audio 3251 amp with their power supply, which offered a noticeable improvement over the Meanwell type SMPS I used previously.

I also have a soft spot for my TDA7498 based system which, when coupled with the Missions, provides a pleasurable listening system...

From speakers mentioned above, Q2050 is easiest, lightest load for amplifier. So 3116/18 performs good with heavier load, 3250/51 need lighter load ? Do the 3250/51 sound weak to you? Funny.

Purely technical and just looking at the tpachip, forgetting the outputfilter, the BD amplifier 3116/18 performs better, distorts less, when inputsignal goes up, so when more output is needed the BD amps distort less.
The AD amplifiers tpa32xx distort less with lowest input, when less output is required, increasing the inputsignal, raising volume, and distortion goes up.
With good nearby powersupply the BD amplifier has dominant 3rd harmonic distortion, create distance between powersupply and chip and 2nd harmonic distortion increases. Increasing output for the ampboard(including outputfilter) gives dominant 3rd harmonic.
With good nearby powersupply the AD amplifier has around equal 2nd and 3rd harmonic distortion, create distance between powersupply and chip and 2nd harmonic becomes dominant. Increase output and 2nd harmonic grows more than 3rd harmonic, but 5th harmonic becomes dominant.
Different amplifiers chips, should sound different unless other parts dominate sound.

Okay, so I am rebuilding my system again! Sold off my other gear but looking for a nice quality amp in the interim while I rebuild my system. I was going to turn to Derek at Fleawatt to build me another chip amp but unfortunately he is taking a break from building amps right now. Sad, VERY sad. His stuff is nice! So I need another alternative right now. Was looking at the Lepai on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B...10-16ae-50e4-87f8-5065e06c9913&pf_rd_i=281053 or the Nobsound SMSL. https://www.amazon.com/Nobsound-TPA3116-Channel-Digital-Amplifier/dp/B00WTOAC1M or Fosi https://www.amazon.com/Channel-Ampl...rd_wg=bLrAT&psc=1&refRID=SXZWDR204KCSG95JV6WH.

Any other suggestions?

I have the second one, which also is sold under the name "Breeze". Good build quality, tiny, and no hiss/pop. You can get it for much cheaper from eBay, just search for breeze amp. Then you can also choose your power supply based on how much power you want.

Thanks for the tip. Have been wanting to get a TI eval board for some time, might have to go for it now. IRS2092 has my attention lately - also very good!

The Bamboozle, lol.

Unique!

Always wanted to try the Eval board for the 3116. Anyone know where I might be able to still get one? Ebay has shit prices on them.

Well you can get them from TI still at $149. But at that price might as well go for the 1/2 price offer on newer boards no?

Although that is true, my entire setup is currently setup around the 3116 board. Don't want to unbalance it. :)

Next generation from 3116/18 is the 3128(is becoming a series), 3128EVM J11 jumper sets amplifier to BD modulation (like 3116).

Again icepower 100as2 includes powersupply (~3251evm+PSU) and one should be able to source them cheaper.

I also have a couple of the Breeze Audio (Nobsound) TPA3116 amps and they sound excellent. I purchased mine from China on ebay and AliExpress - they are available in several colors. I purchased power supplies separately from ebay as it was a bit less money to do it that way. That "Fosi" amp appears to be a Breeze Audio/Nobsound with a different name on it. Ordering from Amazon Prime certainly is a consideration since they have such a great guarantee and return policy.

Here is the AliExpress link where I got the Breeze Audio TPA3116 amp in black (currently less than $22 shipped to USA, takes several weeks to arrive)... https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Bre...32798456013.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.RmUnp8

I will look into one of those.

I have another power supply question, getting close to start work as the family is leaving me alone for the summer, I have a line on a astron ls35a, which is linear, but 35A, the evm board requires 10 I believe. Everything I understand says I'm ok, but am I creating a hazard doing such? Volts are also a bit lower but I don't have anything that demanding. If I'm lucky there will be space inside the astron and it will become the amp. I have the 3251 board and I should just get a meanwell supply and be done, but linear power supply seems to provide a better power source per forums opinions. Preamp will be a s come generation bottle head foreplay and/or a Stan Warren superphon sp100.

I bought mine from Amazon. Yes, it cost more but I knew I was covered in case I got a lemon. $40 but I had it in two days. And BTW it sounds great!
