Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

No hifi, but I found a very interesting although rough looking organ.synthesizer, an Elka X30. Although sold as 'portable' in it's day, I wouldn't call it that. Anyway, hauled it in the car and then into the house. Took some cleaning, fiddling, cursing etc. but it's working again. Pics are before (in the car) and after.

Don't know if this is the place for it. But just had the most worst experience at GW. I was looking at the movies, and some guy comes up to me trying to intimidate me. I didn't know why, then realized there was a kid sitting on the floor by my feet. So I told him I didn't realize his son was there. He starts accusing me of being inappropriate with his kid, and I told him I didn't even touch him, and he says he knows I didn't, but wants me to leave. I told him no, I didn't do anything wrong. He comes back with 5 goodwill employees who escort me out of there. Listen to his whole complaint, and just ask me to leave or they'd call the police. All the while the guy is threatening to "do something" to me.

I'm clean cut with no criminal record. This guy was full of tattoos dressed like some gang banger.

Man. I'm sorry to hear about that experience. A guy I know, (not really know, but we run into each other so often at the thrifts that we shoot the shit) had a couple guys threaten him at the record bin a couple weeks ago. He was going through the bin and one of them reached in and grabbed one as he was flipping through. Words were exchanged and they threatened to kick his ass ect...The manager got involved and those guys aren't allowed back..

I'm not sure how I would handle being accused of being inappropriate with someone's kid... That sucks.

Stopped by the Goodwill Outlet today. It is a pretty wild place with dozens of people digging through the bins. A fun place, if you like to dig for Silver.

Eureka! Dadgum--I struck silver! A Yamaha K 960 cassette for the price of a 12 ounce imitation Blueberry Red Bull. Most likely needs new belts or idler but such a pretty face. I had to rescue her.

That's a nice deck. I owned one once and the belts weren't too difficult to install; as I recall, the counter belt needs to work for the deck to function.

The Outlets are indeed a wild place; not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but if you're persistent, once in a while you can find something really cool for really cheap.

Case in point: I went today and found an AR XA turntable. The parts were strewn across two different bins so it took me awhile to put it all together, but nothing's missing except the arm rest. As an added bonus, a Stanton 681 (the one with the little brush) was mounted in the headshell. The catch is that the tonearm will need to be rewired. Still, a pretty good deal for $1.34!

At my outlet, several 'alpha males' attack the new bins, tossing everything to the adjacent bins. Surprised the Yamaha or your XA weren't trashed. My K960 has barely a scuff. The heads and pinch roller have very little wear.

As expected the belts are goo. I am going to order some from Ebay. I have not checked out the idler yet. I just downloaded the service manual. Do you remember what you have to disassemble to install the belts. First, ,I need to clean up the tar.

My goal is to get this working and then I will have a complete Goodwill Yamaha silver stack put together over the years: Ca2010 receiver, 950 tuner, the K960 cassette and NS 1000 Monitors.

I would have been on my cell phone calling the police myself.

Found speakers curbside on large item trash day...
At the thrift I found a Beomaster Bang and Olufsen 5000 It looks like phonograph, cassette and receiver with control panel $50. Photos soon.

Those 5000 components from B&O are not only very good-they are also very well built.
After having had probably 12-15 pieces from the 5000-7000 series,
I can say this:

-The receivers have ALL worked flawlessly-and are sonically way underrated.
-The turntables are very good sounding, best (no competition!) when it comes to user...eh...userfriendly?
They even have built-in lights that stream just above the platter-for those late hour sessions.
Will need new belt, cleaning and lubing-possibly a new pu from Soundsmith.

Push phono on the remote and hear the receiver turn on with a `click`..then the following `click` from the turntable
who starts automatically.Love it.I like those B&O tangentials som much I keep on buying them,
even though my lp-collection is about only 12 items,
the Sabrina picture discs :D

Becord 5000 belts have probably turned into black glue,
new can be bought online.

A real bargain for 50$.

I'd have told them "Lay one hand on me, my lawyer will be calling you".

I have had a really good non audio week at the thrifts, but today was the clincher. Decided I needed a haircut today after buying groceries, so I went to my regular. Closed. Of course, it's Sunday! Thought of another place that might be open, so I headed there. As I was going by my local thrift, turned the wheel left into the parking lot. Wasn't even planning on going!

Going through the store, nothing jumps out at me until I get to the glass counters. Look behind, and I see a dysan c23! Does it work? They tested it out for me. Got it with an extra 30% off using a coupon! These were $499 at Canadian Tire before they were discontinued! And everything seems to work fine!:banana::banana:

Perfect timing now that Sears is closing and my aging Kenmore is ready to go to one of the kids.

I'm thinking of meeting with my lawyer anyway tomorrow to figure out if there's anything I need to do to protect myself as of now. I know cctv systems automatically delete after awhile. Want to see about getting copies of video from time I was in store.

Let it go. It's over and the thug is off to something else. Getting satisfaction for this may not be worth it.

Not looking for satisfaction, just trying to cover my own bases. I have sleep apnea, and I haven't been able to sleep since. I was afraid to leave my house today. My wife asked me to go pickup lunch for us, and I stood outside, and waited for the family with kids to leave before going inside.

What really gets me was how quickly they all decided to assume my guilt, and then try to intimidate me while this guy was threatening me.

I can sympathize with you. When I first start started as a letter carrier with the post office, I had a lady blindside me one day and start pulling the mail out of my mailbag. She kept yelling "Where is it?" I was taken aback and told her to get out of my mailbag. She said she had left her purse on a table by the front door and gone back upstairs. When she came down, her purse was gone and I was the only one outside. I told her I didn't have her purse.

She then said I had probably hidden it in the bushes near me and she started to look in there. She looked up when she didn't find it and told me she was calling the police. I told her I was reporting her for tampering with the mail and she stormed off. All day I was paranoid, waiting for a police car to roll up next to me. I was only 19 and I could see my whole life screwed up over this. No police came and I went back to the office and reported what happened to the postmaster.

He was pretty upset and told me to go back out to the area and knock on doors and try to find out the woman's identity. No one answered the doors of the houses near the scene of the crime so that was the end of it. I'm guessing she had laid her purse down somewhere else and then found it after finishing with me.

I still think about how a false accusation can mess up your whole life. Jumping to conclusions can do quite a bit of damage.
