How to diplomatically...

So most of my friends know that I'm an audio/music nerd. A good friend asked about my Magical Hard Drive which has all the FLAC rips of my CDs as well as those of my girlfriend. Said friend's musical tastes don't intersect much which is actually fine, that's an opportunity. I offered, since I'm all caught up on ripping my own stuff, to start on his CD collection so he could build his own library and do what I did, store his physical CDs in a closet and listen through them through his portable hard drive or NAS.

I'm looking at a stack of 20 CDs and every single one is either a greatest hits CD or a compilation. How do I suggest that there's a better way? Or do I just grit my teeth and let it go?

do what you said: "start on his CD collections" do one/two/many then tell him he can continue
on his computer.

Mostly this, IMO.

Frankly, while the overwhelming majority of my CDs are traditional artist/album, these days I play my gigabytes of digitized material more on random play than an album end to end.

Oh, sure, I still do the album thing, so to speak, but again more often a compilation play list or just random play.

Why can't this person do their own ripping?

Some people don't know how.

I work with a guy that uses a computer every day and is a certified fluid power specialist. He's a smart guy, but he didn't know much about this sort of stuff.

Helped him rip som stuff so he had a USB stick he could plug into the media player on his Harley.

I may be missing something here. If the CD's in question are commercially available ones there should be no problem doing a straight rip of them. I realize that many here break their music library into a bunch of folders and sub-folders. None of that is really necessary. All the PC music programs I'm aware of use the metadata automatically embedded in each file (except wav) to catalog files. IME the only player that doesn't get compilations right is JRiver. It breaks them into individual "albums". I believe it has to do with the way a player indexes its internal DB engine.

FWIW: I've never used Windows Media Player.

media player on his Harley.

I know you ride and I hope this doesn't rub you the wrong way. There is no good way to enjoy music on a bike, especially a HD. Listening to speakers is like having a lawnmower running in your living room while trying to listen, and earbuds are dangerous.
As far as the OP goes, his tastes are probably closer to the average than us audio freaks. Slip in a couple that he hasn't heard and think he might like. If he doesn't, erase them, if he does, reel him in!

I doubt that the Harley guys are all that concerned about SQ...it's more likely they just like to have another accessory to get chromed :naughty:

No offense to me. It's his bike, not mine.

Personally, between the pipes, open element air cleaner, and wind noise, I don't need any more noise from my ride, stereo or otherwise.

greatest hits albums have their place
for some its all they know about the artist and all they want or need to know
i have tons of full discographies, and my gf is alway impressed with the stuff she never heard, having grown up with mostly radio or mtv.
but today i played ringo starr's greatest hits, for me that all the ringo i need
and i too sometimes just put the whole library on random or i end up playing the same albums over and missing lots of music that i do own

Ha, I thought you were going to say, 'it's more likely they just like to have something loud to piss off half the population.'

Yah....

Give your friend a quick lesson on how to and let go. Kind of like the old saying.....you can teach a man to fish and he’ll eat forever if he has the common sense to learn from another person. You don’t have to respond to an entitled aptitude..
