Prophetic Songs

Ever wonder how it is that some music artists seem to have a knack for being prophetic.

Here's some examples, the first being Frank Zappa's "I'm The Slime" released in 1973. If your not familiar with it it's a song about the media in particular the news media. The lyrics that really resonate with me in this day an age 24 hour media, social media etc are as follows:

"I am gross and perverted. I'm obsessed 'n deranged. I have existed for years, but very little has changed. I'm the tool of the government and industry too, for I am destined to rule and regulate you. I may be vile and pernicious, but you can't look away. I make you think I'm delicious, with the stuff that I say. I am the best you can get have you guessed me yet? I am the slime oozin out from your tv set.......... You will obey me while I lead you and eat the garbage that I feed you until the day that we don't need you Don't got for help...no one will heed you Your mind is totally controlled It has been stuffed into my mold and you will do as you are told until the rights to you are sold"

In my humble opinion he couldn't of known that someone would create the internet and eventually social media but when he says "Until the rights to you are sold" I think it he totally nailed it especially how big data stores and profits off our internet activity.

Another somewhat prophetic song is called "Casualties of War" by Eric B & Rakim, written in 1992 after the Gulf War. Told from the perspective of a soldier there's a lyric that goes like this:

"So I wait for terrorists to attack every time a truck backfires I fire back I look for shelter when a plane is over me remember Pearl Harbor? New York could be over, G kamikaze, strapped with bombs no peace in the East, they want revenge for Saddam"

Pink Floyds "Welcome to the Machine" 1975, in my opinion was very much about the surveillance state and even more so today with cameras & microphones everywhere, computers, tv's, street corners, smart phones etc

"Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been"

Rush "Temples of Syrinx" is another one too

"We are the priests of the temples of Syrinx Our great computers fill the hallowed halls"

I'm just curious as to what songs other people know of that seem prophetic.

Its just an old song - but ...

PAUL KANTNER , GRACE SLICK & DAVID FREIBERG (Jefferson Airplane/Starship)
- from Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun ..."Flowers of the Night" (1973)

Paine and Pierce and Robespierre, Juarez and Danton,
Luther, King and Lumumba dead but far from gone
Lenin, Cleaver, Jesus too, outlaws in their nations,
Revolutionaries all, dreamed of liberation

God is up in heaven his agents here on earth
The church has said that this man rules, he's best because of birth.
But what's that noise down in the street, who dares to shout and sing?
With all his courtiers at his side, who dares to touch the king?

Old man get some soldiers, keep them close at hand
There's a fire in the country, there's a flame come to the land
Seven thousand loyal troops, in ranks they stretch so far
With seven thousand well armed men, no one can touch the czar.

Louis watch the prisons, send the goons around
Is that Paris burning, is the Bastille falling down?
And where are all the mercenaries - paid for by the king?
Have they joined the mob you say, doesn't money mean anything?

Old men get some soldiers, keep them close at hand,
The seeds that were sown yesterday now flower in the land
And guard yourself most carefully with military might.
For plants that cannot bloom by day must flower in the night.

From a great, great record. Unlike anything they did before or after. Produced by Todd Rundgren.

I thought about the Steeleye Span song "Fighting For Strangers" and the plight of many veterans who have received poor care in veteran's hospitals.

They said he was a hero and not to grieve
Over two wooden pegs and empty sleeves,
They carried him home and set him down
With a military pension and a medal from the crown.
You haven't an arm and you haven't a leg,
The enemy nearly slew you,
You'll have to go out on the streets to beg,
Oh poor Johnny what have they done to ya?

Jimi Hendrix - "I Don't Live Today"

Will I live tomorrow?
Well, I just can't say
Will I live tomorrow?
Well, I just can't say
But I know for sure
I don't live today
No sun comin' through my windows
Feel like I'm livin' at the bottom of a grave
No-ho sun comin' through my windows
Feel like I'm livin' at the bottom of a grave
I wish you'd hurry up and rescue me
So I can be on my miserable way.

Sadly, parts of this Jethro Tull song certainly seem on the way to being prophetic:
(BTW, "charabanc" in the first verse is "an early form of bus, used typically for pleasure trips").

Wond'ring Again (from the Living in the Past album)

There's the stillness of death on a deathly unliving sea
and the motorcar magical world long since ceased to be,
when the Eve-bitten apple returned to destroy the trees.
Incestuous ancestry's charabanc ride,
Spawning new millions throws the world on its side.
Supporting their farflung illusion, the national curse,
And those with no sandwiches please get off the bus.

The excrement bubbles, the century's slime decays,
And the brainwashing government lackeys would have us say
it's under control and we'll soon be on our way
to a grand year for babies and quiz panel games
of the hot hungry millions you'll be sure to remain.
The natural resources are dwinding and no one grows old
And those with no homes to go to, please dig yourself holes.

We wandered through quiet lands, felt the first breath of snow,
searched for the last pigeon, slate gray I've been told.
Stumbled on a daffodil which she crushed in the rush,
heard her sigh and left it to die.
At once felt remorse and were touched by the loss of our own,
held its poor broken head in her hands, dropped soft tears in the snow
and it's only the taking that makes you what you are.
Wondering aloud will a son one day be born
to share in our infancy in the child's path we've worn.
In the aging seclusion of this earth that our birth
did surprise. We'll open his eyes.
