Turntable issues

Greetings, I have some issues with my two turntables. I am the original owner of a Philips GA 212 and a Mitsubishi DP-EC2. After decades of faithful performance, the 212 will not stay on 45 or 33 after touching the selectors. They immediately return to stop. On the EC2, everything works as it always has, except that a noticeable, motorized sound has developed when the tone arm is activated an also returns to rest. Would anyone have some thoughts on these two issues? Thank you very much.

Regarding your somewhat rare Mitsubishi....my first guess would be that the muting switch is sticking. This switch opens/closes during turntable movement (other than normal play, of course) to keep you from hearing mechanical noise generated by the tonearm moving (from its rest to the album, from the end of the album back to the rest, when cueing, etc). You will need to open up the TT, locate it, and see if it is operating correctly.

This thread may get you started on the Phillips:

Try moistening your finger before pressing the 33 or 45 start buttons and see if that helps. The resistance-based switch is kind of cool, but they always become problematic with time.

And here is a link to the service manual. It's free, but you will have to register first.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. You have a wealth of knowledge. Much appreciated.

You are most welcome. The contacts on the muting switch may just need to be cleaned. If corroded, try a small piece of 1000-1200 grit sandpaper, gently, one or two passes. Move the tonearm to watch it activate and deactivate, checking for good contact and good separation. Good luck with both of them.
