Anyone AD /AR/ NG that got a Panorex appointment post Gander/Beirut at Ft. McLellan mid-1980s likely met me face to face. I ran the Panorex ID program for that command area and the only award I felt I earned was for managing that program hands-on.
Panorex was the standard method of ID'ing remains before DNA, the previous panorex procedure wasn't 100 percent. The new one was. Previously, the sole Panorex record stored and traveled with the troops, which were damaged/ destroyed in both the Gander troop transport crash, and the Beirut barracks bombing, making ID of remains difficult to impossible. The new program assured positive on-film individual ID info on two films, one of which was archived in a central location. Previously, the film was coupled to the individual via an otherwise meaningless letter code that could only be verified by visually matching the film to the individual. The new positive unambiguous system used name and service number on the two films.
Nowadays, we have DNA, but not then.

Basic in San Antonio, Tech School at Lowry in Denver,
Same here. My tech school was almost 10 months long. Initially it was F/FB-111 electronic warfare test stations. My first permanent duty assignment was Eglin AFB @ Fort Walton Beach ,Florida. (33rd TFW ) No F-111's . Just a bunch of brand new F-15 A and B models. They had to send me back to Lowry for a 10 week TDY for training on the F-15 EW test station.
