A/D/S L710... how much?

Excellent.

Now give em a good listen and let us know how you like em and what is going out to be able to keep them and the wife.

Trying them with the H/K 460i just to make sure nothing is amiss with them.
So far the sound tremendous.
I had them up on a table to start with and moved them to the floor and it was a whole different ballgame.

Got rid of a receiver, CD player and a pair of Minimus 11s today to a friend.
That helped.

I'm thinking the KLH 23s will need to go.
I'm clearly an ADS guy.

Look to be in wonderful condition! Stands are sweet. Amazing speakers - you’re going to love them!

They are in really nice condition. The veneer is nice and the color is way better than the L520s. I'm a little concerned about the midrange drivers looking like some of the sticky has dried out if that's possible. Sound really good though.
My previous favorites were a pair of Canton Karat 200s that I love. The L710s have the potential to unseat them.

Imperfect sticky domes are the rule with this series with the metal grills. Mine definitely aren’t perfect. Cloth does a better job protecting the domes.

That’s the trade off for the cool cabinets and cat proof bronze goodness. Worth it to me. I love seeing the drivers peaking through the grills.

I will never understand pushed in dust caps.
It's the speaker equivalent of eating your boogers.
Dust caps are largely cosmetic. Pushed in domes can have a very adverse effect on function. I would like to think that it's not "speaker people' who are pushing them in, though I have accidentally done this while bringing home a thrift score once.

Finally sanded the 520s and hit them with some Howards. Could not get the drivers out so I came up with an elaborate system to keep dust off the drivers. Toilet paper rolls, floral cellophane, painters tape and newspaper.
They ain't perfect but neither am I.

Did you try the Barkeepers Friend and vinegar?
You know I was happy just sanding away in the 90° heat.
I actually kind of like the character the stain gives the speaker. With the grain popping a little more I'm totally happy with the results. The wife likes them better too but not as much as the 710s.
Plus if I'd decided to use the BK Friend I would have had to remember it and go find it.
I'm not sure if I'm lazy or a minimalist.

Refinishing cabs is one of the many reasons I love vintage speakers. So much wonderful wood veneer that was meant to be seen in the room, not hidden away in the walls or in black boxes. Nice job.

So any way...
I finally got around to a/bing the 520s and the 710s and i gotta say i am more a fan of the 520s.
They have more bite in the mids.
The 710s are more like 80s scooped mid Mesa Boogie metal sounding vs. a nice garage rock Marshall.
At first i thought it might be the A5 which sometimes seems dark sounding. So i hooked them up to my little Sansui 1000x and it was the same.
Could this be a crossover issue or just the sound of the 710s?
P.S. i never got rid of the 23s. Cheating!

Mike

You wouldn’t be the first to pledge allegiance to the 520s. I’d love to hear some someday.
