David Beatty?

I've got some McIntosh gear from my step-mother in law that was purchased from David Beatty in 1963. She even had the original sales receipt!

They were intalled in a very large console system by Barzilay which included matching speaker cabinets housing all JBL drivers. It rocked then and they still do today after being restored.

Her daughter tells me of times when she would lie in front of it and cry to Moody Blues albums.

Cheers,

David
What daughter??? He is my dad...

Cool thread. I'll just chime in that I too have seen a fair number of those David Beatty badges over my last 20 years here in Overland Park. I have had a couple pieces myself. Wasn't david Beatty one of the early long time sponsors for Bill Shapiro's Cyprus Avenue show?

Cheers all.
You're right! That's my Dad!

In the interest of completeness, I should also add that another KC store is owned by former Beatty guys: Soundfx is owned by Robert Bruce. They seem to be primarily a home theater shop, but are one of the very few independent stores left in the KC area.

I think Soundfx is gone. In fact, having lived in New Mexico for three years, I checked the yellow pages the other day, only to find that almost all the old-time high-end audio stores are gone. Accent Sound is gone. Audio Mart is gone. Funny, the only semi-old audio store left is Independence Audio, a store I never thought all too highly of, though I did buy a few items there back in the day.

Sad, sad, sad.

Was about to ask the same question "Who the hell is David Beatty Sound Specialist" - but found this thread. I just locally (kc area) purchased a Sony STR-7025 which had that on there.

I bought many electronics at David Beatty stereo 1616 Westport Rd Kansas city, Mo., and remember talking to Lloyd Bloodgood he was very knowledgeable on all electronics. I have a few with the David Beatty emblem still on them. I found a custom David Beatty console last spring with a Sherwood S-8000 receiver in a Barzilay cabinet, to my surprise it had the JBL 175DLH and D-130 woofers with an N-1200 crossover installed.

I had a Yamaha cr-820 and just got a Sony STR-6050 witht the David Beatty badges. Cool to hear the history of kansas city and the people from here.

You are right. Soundfx is closed; for several years now (just noticed your post, lol). And also, the others are gone as well, including Kief's in Lawrence, KS, unfortunately, because I made a few trips over there and they made it worth my while. Independence Audio is still going strong! A friends' father knew the original owner (I believe the current owner is his son), and it was started in the guys garage or something like that. Some of the used record stores have been selling used equipment in the last few years although it is not the place to score a bargain....

David Beattys was the place my friends and I would go after getting super high and we would ask them to hear the best system using those master disc. They were so cool... they would set us up in the big room that had beautiful leather coaches... they would turn down the lights and I mean they would open up the volume. It was clear and crisp. I will never forget those times. Super Tramp... Pink Floyd .. man. Music played thru that high end equipment was so magical.

Does anyone from KC remember a store on Metcalf in the late 70s called Audio Professionals? They were a small chain if I remember correctly, somewhere between 95th and 75th street. Or am I just remembering the name wrong?

Dave Beatty was a fun place to go. Went to school in Kansas. I was one of the few that had a decent stereo in the frat house. One of my buddies had a Kenwood receiver, a Garrard, and JBL Lancer 77 speakers. My first exposure to JBLs!
My buddy took me there. Their electrostatic speakers were killers! His parents had custom speaker cabinets with JBL components. They indirectly got me interested in JBLs. Own the L100s and the Decade 26s. Still looking for a set of Lancers....

Recently purchased a Elac Miracord 625 turntable with a David Beatty badge. I think it’s cool as I remember visiting his shop back in the day!

I found this Sherwood S-5000ii 7591 tube amp with the David Beatty tag

Gives the unit provenance

Along with my DOB MAC this is a great privilege to have one of his pieces

Back in the 70s I visited Davidi Beatty several times while in college. Really cool store in Kansas City. Sadly one of the owners took his life ending the store, if memory serves. Those US built Sherwoods were awesome. We had one in my high school music room back in NY.
