Pops in Blu-Ray sound tracks?

not all who wander are lost
Hoping for some ideas on an issue I've been having. My PS3 recently died and so I switched to a blu ray player for movies. Thing is when I watch a movie now I get these intermittent clicks/popping sounds during playback from the speakers.

I have tried two different blu Ray players and so I am at a loss. I am running HDMI to the tv then analogue output to my preamp. PS3 was hooked up the exact same way. I have set the bdps to two channel output and also tried them with multi channel on as well thinking maybe the tv's dac was choking on down mixing to stereo. Issues occurs either way.

Any ideas? I wonder if I should just buy an external dac to see if that cleans it up but the issue did not exist using the PS3 so I don't think it's the tv's internal dac.

Have you considered that the disk itself may be scratched or otherwise damaged? All manner of optical disks are not “perfect forever”.

Well it's happening on every disk I have tried. So I don't think it's that but who knows? I think it has something to do with d to a conversion but don't know why a PS3 would differ from a bdp when sending digital via hdmi to th tv's dac.

Try removing the TV from the equation, or at least look for any controls on the TV Which process audio and toggle them

Ah good idea will give it a shot. I think the tv is having trouble with downmixing to stereo but even when the bdps are sent to stereo it still pops. If I can't figure it out I might have to try and outboard dac.

What's wrong with your ps3? If it's a backwards compatible model, I highly recommend getting it repaired, it's probably not as expensive as you think. The launch PS3 really were wonderful machines, LPCM audio output, plays blurays and SACD, as well as original ps2 games. The only thing that annoys me about it is how loud the fan is.

If your ps3 is just having trouble reading discs, it's a simple fix, you just need to take it apart, and clean the laser lens. If it's restarting on it's own, shutting down, or having other heat related issues. You just need to change the thermal compound on the two chips. When I took mine apart, the thermal compound was so dried, it had cracks all over it, and looked like the Bonneivlle salt flats.

I'm not sure exactly. It is an 80gb BC model so it really is cool as it plays old games (ps1/2), SACDs, has tons of other features etc. I think it had a hardware failure as when I power it up it flashes a yellow light real quick then goes to flashing red. I think this means YLOD and hardware issues. I was playing Fallout NV and it just died all of the sudden. It's pretty old so I wasn't too surprised but bummed. I suppose I could see if someone around here fixes them. I though about a PS4 but other than better graphics its like Sony removed features compared to the PS3.

As for BDP issue, still no solution I've tried all sorts of different settings on the TV and BDP. Still the freaking random pops. I'm going to try a different HMDI cable as I have a few and see. Otherwise I don't know what the hell is wrong. Maybe a dac is in order or maybe I just get the PS3 fixed!

If you still haven't tried a different TV altogether, I suggest doing that.
I've only got the one tv. Seems like most new TVs does even have analogue outputs anymore thus requiring an external dac or AVR/processor. I have considered getting a processor but they are expensive and I am only running stereo plus a sub so it seems like a waste to do that. Going to watch a movie tonight, fingers cross the cable swap solves the issue :)

Sounds like overheating damage, probably too far gone for an easy DIY fix. But I've heard of people using this service with good results http://www.ps3specialist.com/playstation-3-reballing-repair-service-one-year-warranty/

I would absolutely repair it if it was me. There isn't a device that's as versatile, and it's sound quality as an audio playback device is surprisingly good in LPCM.

I only had static from an. Old Sony stereo receiver and not sure how to fix it it high distortion or popping is often a sign something has gone wrong in your amp.
I’d like to fix it someday tho I miss that old stereo was powerful for a cheap model.

No fix from the cable swap. I don't think its the amp or preamp as when feeding them from an RP3 with hifiberry hat dac there are no artifacts in the sound. I figure it has to be the TV. I just can't understand why all would be well using a PS3 via hdmi vs two different BDPs via hdmi. Well, thanks everyone for the advice :)

Was your PS3 set to output 2 channel LPCM? Do your BDP have similar audio output settings? Maybe give them all a try?

Just an update, it was the tv. I grabbed an outboard dac and with it plugged into the tv's digital output I still got the pops. Once I bypassed the tv and used the digital output of the BDP no more pops. Can't believe tv's digital and analogue outputs were affected so wierd.

Probably the TV's mainboard went bad. It's not uncommon, modern flat panels TVs have 3 circuit boards usually (power supply, mainboard, t-con board). To keep them cool without bulky heat sinks, they usually use thermal pads to allow the chassis to act as heatsinks. The thermal pads often get shifted over time by gravity, which cause boards to overheat. The boards usually don't cost much, and are fairly easy to replace.
