Rectifier diode

I'm recapping a Lafayette LT425T tuner . It has DS1P rectifier diodes (2). PS is -21vdc and mains fuse is 0.7A. I have a lot of 1n4004 diodes I would like to use . I had the tuner playing and it didn't draw anything near 1A . Can you use the mains fuse amp rating in choosing the diode's amperage rating ? (higher of course). NTE 116 for DS1P replacement .

I wouldn't replace a working part with an NTE anything.

I'm not using NTE . I couldn't find the specs for the DS1P so I used the NTE cross for reference , I'm looking to use 1n4004 . New diodes are cheap and more reliable. "It ain't broken don't fix it " becomes "it was working great a minute ago " Preventive Maintenance .
