Recapping and repairing a Harman Kardon 730 twin power series stereo receiver

Good catch! You've found a typo. The part number is right, a 22 uF KL cap, but the value listed in my BOM, 33 uF, is wrong. It should be 22 uF for C713. Now corrected in the BOM.

    Transistor subs for 2SC1573-Q, 2SA666A-AD3, 2SC828-R for Technics SA-5350

"Lists of transistor substitutions" sometimes disappoint because a proper substitution takes into account how that transistor is being used in a given circuit and not just the model number of the transistor. So, if you find an old 2SC1315 has a modern substitution of KSA1845F (in general from a...

Recapping and restoring and upgrading a Heathkit AR-1515 receiver

Yep, I’ve still got that entire set from you, @nj pheonix , stored away somewhere in the bin. I’m happy to return them, if you like. I’d offer to scan them all, but it’s hundreds of pages. I can drop a link to the Google Drive folder where I’ve stored all the scans I _did_ make way back when...

HK 630 twin burnt resistor on Tuner/Preamp Power supply and other issues

KSC1845F and KSC1845FTA are identical devices. The additional "TA" on the end is merely the device packaging prefix. In this case it means "these devices are delivered on a tape instead of loose / individual devices / bulk". More details here...

HK 630 twin burnt resistor on Tuner/Preamp Power supply and other issues

For a signal-processing board like the PHONO board you are asking about, you'd want the electrolyitc caps with the least DC leakage (producing distortion) for the signal path, e.g. Nichicon UKL or KL series, or polyester/polypropylene film caps of the same capacitance. Nearly all of the...

    H/K 730 Input Jack Issue

Keep in mind the connectors between the RCA jacks on the rear panel and the selector board are weird and prone to dirt, grime, corrosion, etc. If you have some of that, then moving the RCS plugs in the jacks might make a difference... and be different next time you moved them.

    dlucy's guide to Harman Kardon minimalist series 230A, 330, 330A, 330B B-1, 330B B-2, and 330C

Great question. The 330A and 330B are very similar designs, just the 330B is a tiny bit more modern (I.e. slightly better devices), so I’d choose the B (make sure it is B-1) over the 330A for sound character and longevity. The 330C is a similar idea, but it uses a direct-coupled output instead...

    C-2102 corrosion

The PW (and other Px) series from Nichicon often (always?) have brown wraps or labels. The electrolytic caps in a power supply (and those on other boards that store locally the power coming from the power supply) do best with low ESR, high ripple capacitors. Nichicon's Px and Hx are good...

    Bad new transistors

I've had a small number of new transistors... from major brands... from Mouser... install and not work and later determine "oh, the new transistor I installed was bad". Each time it cost me lots of wasted hours and, sometimes, lifted traces as I had to desolder and test and then resolder many...
