    Show Me Your Sansui!

Finally here. Took top and bottom off to give it a quick once over before powering up to see if anything looked abnormal. Some caps marked, so it's had some work done, but looks original and unmolested. A great canvas. Changed out the LED's that were in the meters with orange for now. It's in...

    Best Vintage Preamp

I have had: A couple of Carver's, including a C-1, a Conrad Johnson PV-6, an Audio Research SP-3A1, and a McIntosh C-24. I rebuilt or tested the power supplies in the C-24, the ARC, and the PV-6. The PV-6 was an insult to all of the music I played through it - an NO, there was nothing wrong...

What is the best all around Vintage Turntable?

    Luxman Pd-444 or Pd-441. Done.

    Gold Lion KT88 Alternatives

Just to be clear - I am not talking about the vintage 6550As - the straight sided bottles. I've not had those in my personal system, but I have not heard too many good tings about them.

    Gold Lion KT88 Alternatives

I know you said KT88 types. But... If you keep your eyes peeled around ebay, you can score individual Tung Sol 6550's (a variety of brand names, but the ones with diamond shaped upper micas are all TS)... they do not need to be matched, just look for good, large, shiny, round getter flashing -...

    Luxman owners...

I think I cleaned the microswitches on my 277 and that fixed the issue right up. My favorite piece of Lux gear. PD-444 dual arm table. Best vintage DD TT ever made IMO, but the 441 aint no slouch either. I also love my Lux AD8000 and 8020 MC step up transformer.

    Thinking about MC cartridges

Some folks have suggested a separate phono preamp. I went that route and found it unsatisfying and unnecessary. A good preamp will generally have a good phono stage (as long as you don't get something from the mid-CD era. If you get a LOMC, then you may need a step up device. Many good vintage...

    Thinking about MC cartridges

Whatever you do, just make sure the cartridge compliance is a good match to your arm. If you've not evaluated the resonance frequency of your arm, try the resonance freq evaluator on VE - start there first and see what sort of compliance to look for in a cart. You can find the effective mass of...

Picked up a Luxman PD-272 table - anyone using these?

I had a pd-277 for quite a few years. From what I recall, it was easy to work on, and the arm sounded great with the Grace F-9 I had on it. Love Luxman. Their 70's and pre-Alpine 80's stuff is very nice. Their post-Alpine stuff is quite high-end too. Nice score! My ONLY gripe with that TT is the...

Show us your cartridges and/or tonearms!

Nope, I didn't get that one, I should have said that "I outbid Joseph for this Supex, IIRC!" My bad... Having heard the Helikon on my arm, I was only half-heartedly in that one.

Show us your cartridges and/or tonearms!

Broken cantilever MC cartridges used to go for decent money on ebay before a bunch of us started experimenting with DIY retips. I got pretty good to where I can pretty much repair most things in a cart and retips are not difficult so long as the entire cantilever is snapped off and there is a...

Show us your cartridges and/or tonearms!

Supex SD900 Super retipped by me with a sapphire cantilever and line contact stylus. Makes most any other cart I have personally heard sound meh. I let a Helikon go after I retipped this. I almost never have this cart off the arm. An awesome turntable with an incredibly high mass body helps...

    Luxman

Luxman ran the gamut... they had lower end units for their 70's stuff. They also had true upper echelon. I can't think of a single turntable that I would trade out my 444 for, by any manufacturer, from any era. Their MC transformers were made by pixies in vacuum chambers with copper that was...

Does Everybody Put LP's Back In The Jacket The Correct Way...

No. Most of my LP's are side-up of the side I like the best.

    Show Me Your Sansui!

Just bought a CA-3000. Been looking at either one of the Sony dual-mono preamps, or for a Sansui CA-2k or 3k. I like the impedance settings for the phono being right on the front. I build my own impedance plugs, but those can't exactly be hot switched immediately for a/b comparisons. Would have...

    Beech plywood for tonearm board?

So all the plies are in the same direction? All I can suggest is baltic birch with a piece of beech veneered on top. BB has very few voids and looks great sanded. It will be lighter in color than beech, but you could carefully stain the edges to match before finish. Might be able to help in a...
