Turn it on. If it starts right up, it's solid state. If it takes a couple of minutes to warm up and play, it should be tubes.

These are top of the line, stereohedrons, and sound great. Will fit many stantons and pickering, but not all. Do some homework.

Morton, I would go with the 1800 from LP Gear, and it would be worth it. It appears that it came from Jico, and would be a shibata stylus and should sound great.

It is well worth a new stylus. Several Stanton styli, will fit it and sound great. Including stereohedron styli. That's what I'm using on my 1200e

This subject comes up often and most are misinformed. No, you can not put a gold stylus on a black cartridge, and have gold sound. IF YOU HAVE DONE IT AND IT SOUNDS BETTER, You are an audiophile, and an audiophool. Check with Grado.

Try a used sheet from the dryer. You may have better luck.
