I don't think I'm going to bother with refoaming these- they sound excellent even without the surrounds on the mids, and the off-axis cone excursion on the mids can't be that bad at any rate. Woofers I'd understand but I bet these would go at least another few years without reconing the mids.

Yes you are correct- not ALL the 1290/2's were missing the cavity backs, just the later ones. The first pair of 1290's I ever owned were a pair of walnut finish 1290/2's I found at a pawn shop, and like yours even though they were the 1290/2 designation they also had the cavity backs.
