    Sony CDP-200 Early CD Player

update: meh, in the process of trying to get the tray to slide normally, the smallest gear (on top of the loading motor) cracked. Ah well. I only spent $4 on this thing. It's pretty incredible how much simpler CD players got in just a few years. This model is ridiculously complex and hard...

    Sony CDP-200 Early CD Player

I cleaned the gears as much as possible without tearing the entire machine apart, using 91% alcohol. A lot of old yellow grease came off on the q-tips. Then I added more CRC lube on every part. But it still takes a good amount of effort to slide the tray by hand, and the motor can barely...

    Sony CDP-200 Early CD Player

I thought that too, but I'm not sure. On this model, when you press open, the arm assembly and the inner, disc-sized part of the tray ("disc table") rises away from the laser, and then the tray is supposed to slide out. The arm assy and disc table both do what they should. So for testing I...

    Sony CDP-200 Early CD Player

Ancient thread, but by chance do you still have the service manual? I picked up a CDP-200 at goodwill today. I was able to get it playing by cleaning the lens, and it sounds great thru the headphones at least! But the tray won't open, and seems frozen. I can hear the tray motor working, but...

Pioneer SX-535 DC at Speaker Terminal

Try replacing the differential transistors Q1~Q4. They're cheap and easy to replace. This can often fix DC issues.

Speaker wire - at what price point is it snake oil

I'm sure some folks here have heard about the speaker wire vs coathanger test. I found a very recent one where they actually did some fairly good work: https://www.soundguys.com/cable-myths-reviving-the-coathanger-test-23553/ Results: sound-wise, the coathanger held its own, and quite...

    Some Empire Turntable History

Thanks. So exactly 30 inches is the correct length for any 598? DB-508 is the 498/598 model? If 30 is correct, this page has everything wrong: http://turntablebasics.com/belts/empire.html They claim a DB-508 is 31.5 -- not that it matters, because I can't even get a hold of the guy. KAB...

    Some Empire Turntable History

Wanted to follow up on this - i grabbed that connector on ebay and it works fine. I brought the wire thru the end of the pins and just soldered it there, then snipped the extra wire. Unfortunately it looks like it's sold out.

    Favorite Frozen Pizza

My family loves the Screamin Sicilia Mambo Italiano. This one's got meatballs and pepperoni (not sure if uncured). https://www.screaminsicilian.com/product/mambo-italiano/ Target has deals on this one occasionally, usually $6-7. Gotta try Home Run Inn, I keep seeing that. Actually I need to...

    Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Nice - that was my first Discman. Bought it at Target in May 1993. Earlier that day I went over the handlebars on my friend's bike and banged up my face. So it was nice to have something good happen that day! I used that thing so much that it eventually quit working unless I held it...

    EMPIRE 999E/X Cartridge

Probably made around 1970. OEM styli are expensive and difficult to find; I'm afraid it's not worth spending any money on.

Why do you own a cass deck ?

A few years ago I bought a Technics tape deck at goodwill. It came with a mixtape somebody made in the 80s, and on that tape was a great band I'd never heard of called Device. I used shazam to find out the band name. It's got a Bryan Ferry vibe. Check it out!

Pioneer SX-850 with Turntable low volume

I think you're right that the EX is now the same as the E (both are 3x7). My E was the older 4x7, so in theory the EX was an upgrade. How big an upgrade, no idea. Probably not big. I would also add that the EX stylus is made in China, whereas the old E was Japan. I'm guessing the newer 3x7...

Pioneer SX-850 with Turntable low volume

The AT95E is an excellent cartridge even with its stock stylus. A couple years ago I "upgraded" the stylus on mine to the newer red ATN95EX. I didn't do a direct comparison, though it's really great. 2.0g is the sweet spot. I'm not sure if it's still made but it's definitely available.

    Some Empire Turntable History

I found this 5-pin Eby connector on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/281610838390 He says it works with Empire turntables. Nuts and bolts question: how would I solder the wires to the underside of the pins? It seems you'd want the pins to extend to the back/underside of the connector. Second...

    MCS 3253 repair needed (Midwest).

Pardon me for saying so, but an MCS amp that had already been worked on, and later did that to a speaker . . . well, there might be some better (i.e., other) amps available in your area :)

Good choice, gonna spin this one right now! I really dig his earlier stuff, but have you heard his more recent albums? He took a weird turn into indie rock.

Listening to this on my freshly-restored Smaller Advents. I watched the Lee Morgan movie (I Called Him Morgan) on Netflix last night. My wife didn't hate it!
