Non MC great carts of all time, those carts that show MC how it is done what is yours?

The heyday for mm/mi was a long time ago in the 70s. Some of the best carts were designed in the 70s and when vinyl died, so did most of those manufacturers. It’s hard to beat some of those top notch designs that can be found for under 200 bucks even if you have to get a retip. So it is...

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

I have 3 aftermarkets, a silver one that is a real silver Empire grip housing w Empire logo, same exact grip material/build, but a long tapered cantilever that is clearly different than a s915e and the black dot. I actually have two of these and one has black dot and other doesn’t. Someone had...

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

Thank you. I’m a dinosaur with the new software and computer skills but I’m still able to learn. It would be nice to know how you were able to get the final results. I’ve only toyed around with Audacity to see if I could digitize my vinyl (7-8 years ago?).

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

It is going to be interesting to see what becomes of that hf peak with other carts. Like the idea of having a jig for consistent setup.

Can you tell us a little more about the setup you used to create the graphs? What software did you use and how was it gathered (straight feed into a laptop?)

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

Thanks Doug. I remember this being a topic of discussion if they were or were not left over. But hey, what’s not to like about that? It’s like going to Vegas! Put your money down and roll those loaded dice!

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

Does anyone know if the red/white packaged versions are old empire stock or just aftermarket?

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

From past replys it seems that those in that packaging are Russell industry’s. The feedback I have seen is that they aren’t as good as genuine Empire but I haven’t tried gambling with any of them after seeing the feedback. Are returns accepted if you purchase them? Hopefully someone else...

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

The good thing about the 2000z is the aftermarket Styli seem to play well for the most part. I haven’t found anything for the 2000e aftermarket wise that I enjoy.

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

I have to look back on this thread to find the Walco descriptions that were posted a long time ago. But, I recall reading that they were not bad.

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

Just checked. Swiss made copies for S2000z gold colored $34. But, Astatic Japanese s915e in blue, silver and clear yellow @ $40 So it looks like a very good decision to shop around for those 2000z/2000t styli. I much rather buy from a reputable dealer at a fair price. Just found it a...

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

I haven’t seen any NOS there in a few years. Generic Swiss copies were the last that I saw. I think I have a generic copy from RiverTone but that too was a few years back.

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

Just a reminder to thoroughly check out what you see advertised for sale off the Bay. There are some that require a good look. Just saw “EMPIRE NOS” and didn’t realize that the next words were “After market” and indeed it was some generic stylus that imo was overpriced. Claimed to be a...

The best phono preamp under $1000 (aka the Hagerman Bugle upgrade thread)

I noticed the low frequency improvement with the opa2210 & with the 1612 op amp. I wonder how much is involved with the synergy between the op amp and the other components that were used? Why? Just that I noticed less low frequency differences between the 2210 and 1612 after the final...

The best phono preamp under $1000 (aka the Hagerman Bugle upgrade thread)

What I really like here is that the use of the opa2210 drops the noise floor by 6dB! I recall seeing a few posts about the use of the opa2210, in simulation, measuring “higher” in noise and something about it not being designed for audio. But neither of these were true and actually the...

The best phono preamp under $1000 (aka the Hagerman Bugle upgrade thread)

Well I haven’t seen much posted lately but good things take time. Props to @oranda as his suggestions reached Jim Hagerman and the opa 2210 implemented into the Bugle MC after Jim measured the performance w ~ 6dB lower noise floor. That was with just one 2210 op amp being installed. There...

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

If you can find an original totl stylus for it, by all means. I think it is going to be a lot of work to find one and if you do find one I bet it will be expensive. The top of the line stylus or a notch down for your cart is very special. I was hoping you had most of it left with yours. It...

How much of the cantilever is missing? Pic? Repair still can be made. Even if snapped off all the way to the grip housing

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

Also, dug through my box of styli, I found an original empire stylus for my Chunky. It is still new in packaging, a s100s. Says on the packaging that it will track down to 2 g. Clear yellow. Also have an extra aftermarket. I should compare them. Don’t know when I picked it up. Either of...

If it’s worn but original Empire, I would think it’s really worth it to save it with retip.

    JVC QL-?? owners thread

Not if the platter is off. It will jitter around slowly and I was told not to do that. I also had a similar problem when I purchased mine. I thought it was a bad motor or a bad capacitor until I reached out to a technician in Portland who had published his repairs on a few of these models...

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

That’s a great cart and you might consider getting that stylus repaired. It’s going to be hard to find an original stylus from Empire but it’s worth the effort and if not, next best would be to repair the original one. I have tried the aftermarket ellipticals for my a15e and they all had...

anyone else running vintage Empire carts?

I have been using the yellow 4241-D7 from VoM and I think it was evg Japan but I would have to look at receipt. Running it at 2.5 on the hitachi HT-45 on the higher inductance A15E chunky. It is doing well for most 45 s but they are not always in the best shape. Kept in the metal...

    JVC QL-?? owners thread

If it’s not spinning with the platter on, just jittery, it most likely has an issue with the speed control and/or an issue with the board. Check the plastic connectors on the board itself when you open the bottom of the unit. When you work on these, you will have to have put them high up on a...

    JVC QL-?? owners thread

Motor is not supposed to be turned on without the platter. It should have the platter on it and then it should spin. It will stutter when the platter is off.
