What Artist passing affected you the most

Just saw the news about Tom Petty, and oddly I had this thread open at the same time. I just saw him in Seattle last month, and he looked (and sounded) great. :(

    Sansui SP-X8000 (First recap/resto project)

I have also done that, but using a cardboard tube and lung power - if you're concerned about damaging the caps, you can better control the amount of suction.

Thorens TD-150 MkII help with strange washer...

I wonder if it was put there in lieu of vertical tonearm adjustment, to make the platter ride higher by the thickness of the washer. I'm not familiar with the 150 (I'm a 145 man, myself), but I would assume that the tonearm can be raised and lowered to achieve this adjustment just like it can...

    B&O Beovox M100-2 Recap Advice

Dagis, they're great! I ended up using Solens axial caps, with wire to extend the leads to fit. Refoamed the filler drivers, cleaned them up, put on new grills, and polished up the wood cabinets. They look good and sound amazing! Really really great bass, crisp highs, and you can listen for...

Separate Volume Control for Second Speakers - Any Experience?

Thanks! It's a room about 15' wide, 45' long, with very low 8' ceiling. My gear is a Tandberg TR2075 (75 WPC) driving a pair of B&O Beovox M-100s and a pair of Celestion DL4s. With the B&Os only, If you sit in the sweet spot (10' or so in front of the speakers), the sound is perfect, and I...

Separate Volume Control for Second Speakers - Any Experience?

A good point - I'm okay with that; in a way, I like the idea of having a lower wattage amp drive the bookshelf speakers, since they're not rated for very high wattage and it would provide some protection.

Separate Volume Control for Second Speakers - Any Experience?

Okay, so I've been doing some thinking about onplane's second-amp idea. What if I ran the tape out on my main receiver to the tape/aux in on a second lower wattage receiver, and used that to drive the bookshelf speakers? I'd have to have two amps running, but only when I really want the second...

Separate Volume Control for Second Speakers - Any Experience?

Thanks all - I think I'll give the L-pad a shot (it's simpler and cheaper) for now, but I'm intrigued by the dual amp scenario. How does one best split the source signal? A simple Y-adapter on the input cables?

Separate Volume Control for Second Speakers - Any Experience?

Hi - due to the odd acoustics of my listening room, I have a second pair of bookshelf speakers mounted up high to fill out the space with more mid- and high-end. I run my mains through the "A" outputs, and the bookshelf speakers through the "B" output. Thing is, I would like to reduce the...

    B&O Beovox M100-2 Recap Advice

Thanks Crazy - I've used Solen in the past with good results. Parts Express has Solens and Daytons. My conundrum is that the original caps (despite appearances in the photos) are radial caps, with both leads on one end (and the circuitboard is made to fit, with both cap lead points within a cm...

    B&O Beovox M100-2 Recap Advice

Hi guys! I scored a nice pair of Beovox M-100-2's this week. Overall good shape, but they'll need some work (such as a midrange refoam, no biggie). I tore into them to take a look at the crossovers, which are pretty impressive. They have these big, huge and dessicated capacitors, and I...

    Beovox M100-2: Refoaming options?

Google! Now why didn't I think of that? I didn't see any on Ebay at the moment, but I did contact Rick, and hopefully he will have something. If not, I found someone in Germany who sells them. Picked them up today; the midrange foam is toast, but you're right, nice rubber surrounds on the...

    Beovox M100-2: Refoaming options?

Hi Gang, I'm looking at a pair of Beovox M100s on CL. They are a bit of a drive away so I haven't looked at them yet, but the current owner says that the mids need to be refoamed, but the woofers don't have foam surrounds. Is that true (that the mids are the only ones that have foam...

What replacement RCA cables to y'all use on your tables?

Hi gang - a quick and probably silly question for you all: when replacing RCA cables on a turntable, what do you use? I just replaced the RCA cables on a Thorens 145 MkII. The old one had a short, so I soldered in replacements using stock that I had laying around - don't know the brand, but...

Thorens TD-145 MKII plinth resto question

Actually, it is aluminum. It's aluminum sheets wrapped around MDF. I've managed to sand the DL number out and take out the major scratches, and will follow up with some polishing. Plenty of metal there to work with. Removing the chassis from the plinth was really easy. Update to follow.

Thorens TD-145 MKII plinth resto question

Hi Gang! I just became the proud owner of a Thorens TD-145 MKII - a fine turntable, but a previous owner thought it would be a good idea to engrave his DL# into the plinth (and on the side, not the back Ugh!) This is the one with the brushed aluminum plinth (at least, I think that is what is...

Thorens TD 145 MKII - what's it worth?

Hi - came across a TD 145 MKII with a new AT 440 MLB cart. Asking price is $500. Looks like good condition, but owner etched his DL# into the aluminum plinth. The cart, if new, retails for $200 on Amazon. $500 strikes me as a bit high, but I'd like to know others' thoughts. Thanks! Dennis

To Veneer or Not to Veneer - Impact on Value?

An update after doing some finishing work: I will never, ever used the pre-glued iron-on stuff again. The heat-sensitive glue they use never hardens fully, so when you sand an edge or corner that has that stuff, it doesn't sand away but instead forms a gooey, rubbery mess. As try to sand it...

To Veneer or Not to Veneer - Impact on Value?

Thanks for the clarification. I might give that a try - I've never applied heat to wood glue like that before and didn't know it had those properties.
