    Hum Hum and More Hum.

That seems like a lot! I've never measured mine, but once found that the ground wire had come loose after we switched providers and had an immediate hum.

    Hum Hum and More Hum.

For me, it is only one system out of three in our house. Something funky about the wiring where the garage was joined with the house and turned into a bedroom. One hot/neut is probably swapped somewhere. Everything has to be lifted, and I have to use ICs with twisted pair and shield grounded...

The Idiot's Guide to Using DeOxit (revisited)

The secret to Parts Express is ordering $100 or more to get free shipping. AFTER you've used the constant supply of promo codes for 10% off or more of your total order. They sell everything except snake oil. Well, not much snake oil anyway. Best place to buy CL2 12 ga speaker wire ever...

The Idiot's Guide to Using DeOxit (revisited)

Depends? I generally use the green can w fader lube on pots and rotary switches. cleans and lubes in one step, but not the best for everything. Definitely not anything you don't want to remain a tad "greasy."

Yamaha A-1 Repair and restore: beyond Deoxit

The A-1 is a beautiful amplifier, I have added it to my list of "must hear one someday."

    Sub question

Awesome! I have always wanted to do an in wall/attic/basement setup. My first home sub was my college sub in 1992. Kicker comp 15 inside our "coffee table that people dance on in the corner" powerd by a dbx mpa-150 that a buddy gave me because the spring terminals were broken :). That began...

Yamaha A-1 Repair and restore: beyond Deoxit

I had thought about just leaving them wrapped that way, but my dad told me to just go for it and rewrap them. He forgot to tell me he has the tools, or more likely, wanted me to try without them first... He's a retired EE, and we bond over electronics and a beer weekly now. Sometimes his...

Yamaha A-1 Repair and restore: beyond Deoxit

Higher temperature is always good. Higher voltage won’t hurt, unless it won’t fit. Don’t change uF values unless for a specific reason, and make sure you don’t miss any nonpolar caps. I generally stay with whatever brand was in there, and get the best “quality” available. You should look...

Yamaha A-1 Repair and restore: beyond Deoxit

But how do you “rewrap” them and get the same surface area of contact, and not have them fray? That would change my life :).

My observations on the re-cap everything debate.

It wasn’t the years that killed the parts in my M-70. It was the years AFTER someone spilled or urinated in it.

    Todays Speakers vs Vintage Speakers

I can directly attribute two purchase of amazing tower speakers to the influence on the “market” that Sound Bars are exerting. You might not be buying speakers from the same “socioeconomic strata” that I am. To each Thiele own.

Thanks. Was just wondering why the “non-affiliated” tag if none were anyway

My observations on the re-cap everything debate.

I have a $10 Rotel RSX-1056 that needed a $2.36 cap. Not high end, but I didn’t expect to find a bad cap in a piece of 2003 “vintage” gear

My observations on the re-cap everything debate.

Absolutely agree. I used to have three sets of tires for one car, two sets for the other two. I'd change them out for the appropriate season or event. Then again, people put 225mm tires on 10" rims and sell me their factory Audi alloys with 255s for a song...

My observations on the re-cap everything debate.

No, but people are also putting new tires on their new car with new tires, which I don't get.

    Todays Speakers vs Vintage Speakers

Depends on the "vintage" of your frame of reference? ;). Some don't consider early 80's vintage...

What CD Player Do You Use?

Yamaha CD-X1. Plays pretty much as soon as the drawer closes. Why can't modern drives do this?

    Mark B's System

This forum just turned into a porn site for me. I'll be back in a few minutes to tell you what I think of your setup ;). You are the "real" 10,000 maniac. Love it.

My observations on the re-cap everything debate.

I saw a deal on Amazon that was cheaper than what I could find on Mouser without ordering 1000ea. They are even real Elnas, just direct from Taiwan.

    Todays Speakers vs Vintage Speakers

There's still that "value" thing for most people, too. Such a mystery, indeed.

Yamaha A-1 Repair and restore: beyond Deoxit

"audiophile sensibilities" I see what you did there ;) Nothing sensible about it! I have the same inclinations, but it really doesn't need to be directly soldered. The wires will destroy the thru holes with repeated work, IMO. Those pins can conduct more current than anything on the board!

    Receiver running HOT

^THIS! It is the only way to "Stack" anything. I use speaker gasket foam with adhesive side on the rim of the fan, and even install it in the amp chassis if there is room ;). Silent, and no axial vibration.

Upgrading to newer receiver - worth it?

I love combining a modern receiver for phone app control (much easier to use than the remote). volume control, and integrating movies, Pandora, PC HDD, etc into my vintage system. I find even some vinyl sounds really fun in surround with a subwoofer. Some, not so much, but it is nice to have...
