    Fisher 201 stereo receiver help

A BAD cap can't hold charge the longer it remains on.

    Fisher 201 stereo receiver help

That big grey cap is nowhere near new. Output distortion is a power-related problem. This idea of thinking contact cleaner is the "magic cure" to fix ALL vintage equipment is like covering up a rotten ceiling with duct tape:dunno:. If it were a switch problem: the contacts would improve as the...

    A receiver that's a little different..

I'll bet Grundig had something to do with it(?). The front panel layout is similar to the central Europe gear of that time. A Grundig R45 (for example) from the same era had the SW-looking type dial and a cutout below the tuning meters for mechanically presetting stations.

What are you listening to on your reel to reel right now?

the (great) "lost" Sergio Mendes album from 1971 (where, save for one song on it: he abandons Bossa Nova and goes all Laurel/Topanga Canyon:wtf::music:):

    Reliable DD Turntable

The late-'70s YAMAHA dd's, such as: a YP-D7 model. Nice black woodgrain plinth with brushed aluminum accents. Also, a lot of the Yamaha tt's were built by Micro-Seiki (the "higher end" Japan tt o.e.m. as opposed to re-branded C.E.C.).

How to tell if tape heads are good?

They should look like this (a 1976 Dokorder 1120 I just finished completely rebuilding since this past April; after getting it for $25):

TEAC A-1250 7.5 IPS playback slow

The motor-run cap would seem to be the most likely problem...if you don't hear any hint of excessive "grinding" or see the shaft of the motor -particularly in reverse mode- having a wobble to it (which, otherwise, would indicate worse things: like broken windings from overheating or a grooved...

Guttenberg tries to describe reel to reel...

A British guy calling his channel "Techmoan" is the best YT presenter of vintage electronics.

    What the heck is this?

It's "liquid cooled" (really:rolleyes:). It was how (some) of the '80s consumer-grade equipment tried to save design space -and budget- from having to incorporate blocks of cast metal heat sinks.

    Another Noob question

REC OUT on the receiver to LINE IN on the rtr with the receiver's selector set to AUX (or whichever other source input you'd want to record).

    AU-999 weak and distorted channels

Take the card modules out one by one and polish -by hand- the edgecard traces with non-abrasive "Blue Magic" metal cleaner to a bright shine...IT IMPROVES PREAMP DETAIL A LOT. Also, the TO-66 drivers tend to go bad (at least in an AU-999 I'd found in 1998). TO-66 case transistors are hard to...

    Which tape shall be sacrificed?

One of the "AUDIOTAPE 1251". They go all the way back to the early 1950s and might be full track mono (which a 1/4 track erase head is never gonna fully erase anyway...and: the oxide formula is so primitive without major biasing required to give it remotely the record level of treble...

    Broadway Listeners???

I've never heard the quadraphonic remix of COMPANY...but would like to locate a copy one day. Have a lot of the Columbia original cast albums on reel to reel of '60s shows (though, the orchestrations for their often filmed counterparts made better soundtrack recordings).

what was the last year that Pre recorded reel tapes

There are two Japan Toshiba, pre-recorded versions of the Beatles '62-'66 "Red" album: one at 7 1/2, the other 3 3/4 (both legit). A 7 1/2 one sold for $550 earlier this year. However, for the only latter-era reels worth looking for, domestically: Ampex stopped duplicating reels at Elk Grove...

    Another NEW/OLD R2R:

Weak point in the reverse mechanism is, that: it uses a spring-attached fiber strap looped over the motor bearing to sway whichever idler (one per-direction on a rocker assembly) into position against the respective spindle clutch acting as the take-up. The underside of the strap either becomes...

Craig 2408 Reel to Reel Tape Recorder Repair Manual

A "Craig 2408" is the exact same unit as a "Sanyo MR-920". Craig Electronics was named after Robert Craig...whom, had been the other half of the ROBERTS (Akai) import partnership with Robert Metzner. The budget line of Pioneer was "Centrex".

    favorite speakers for 2230?

Vintage Acoustic Research model "2ax". I ran them for 5 years with a 1060 integrated (nearly the identical amp of a 2230) and the sound was always room-filling: beyond what one would've expected from only 30wpc. The vintage "New England Sound" speakers (A.R./KLH/ADVENT/AVID/ALLISON) have a far...

Marantz 18 vs marantz 19 Receiver HELP PLZ!!

A very good "fake" of an 18 (though, with tuning meters instead of a 'scope) is: the scarcely-imported Thorens 1250 receiver built in Belgium. It almost seemed like they got the surplus faceplates and chassies from the same supplier once Superscope had discontinued the 18(?).

KLH Forty-One Reel to Reel Tape Deck

The Sanyos MR-801 and MR-939 are very much the same scale and cosmetic layout of the KLH 41 (save for: the speed selector's location); also the type of rubber reel locks on the Sanyos of that time were the same as supplied with the KLH (they had a "tripod" style shape with an aluminum dot in the...

best pressing of Meet the Beatles

Other than the two tracks from the mono single sides (I.W.T.H.Y.H. and This Boy), the "mono" MEET THE BEATLES has the rest folded down from the stereo. The two best vinyl sources, though, would be (either): an original rainbow label copy pressed on the west coast (distinguishable with the jacket...

    Realistic SA 2000

The RS sa-2000 is, essentially, the same amp as: the rarely-seen NAD 90 and Sherwood S-9400 (built in Japan, very likely, by Foster -later "FOSTEX"- Electric). A very good "sleeper" with a bit more power even than both a Marantz 1060 and 1070:thumbsup:.
