    Which Tuner Rules ?

I had an MD 101, had great reception qualities but the sound wasn't all that to me. Had a late 70s Kenwood, reception wasn't all that but had decent sound. My favorite, for reception and sound, was a Sony ST-J75 I bought new in 1979 or 80. Kept it for 20 years or so in my main listening...

    Hitachi....Huh?

I used an Hitachi TT back in the late 70s, not as upmarket as that, though. It was a decent deck. During that period, Hitachi was just starting to brand their own equipment, most of their equipment was OEM (look at your vintage Japanese tuner, will find that Hitachi half gear symbol more...

Single malt drinkers sit before reading

Call me a man of low moral character and taste, but I just don't care for single malts (or at least those I've tried). Have found a bit of Chivas every now and again to be OK. Of course, drinking YOUR single malt may be OK. I've always had a preference for drinking other peoples' alcohol.

    What's your favorite pocket knife?

I normally carry a Case XX small stockman (don't need one hand opening). I do have several Steel Warrior knives, well finished but don't hold an edge as well as I would expect an RC56 - 58 blade to. Do have a couple of Kershaw assisteds, but I end up with a sore spot on my finger from my...

    Vegas Advice..and Grand Canyon

I used to go to Vegas several times a year, stayed in most of the strip casino/hotels. The only places I would NOT stay at again are the Imperial Palace and the Excaliber. I liked the Paris, but it has an internal walkthrough with Ballys, so I don't know if the extra price is worth it. It...

    T-Amps Decent?

After all the hype online, I picked up one of the original T-Amps and did a listening test comparing it to a couple of $800 plus tube amps using several different speakers. I later had several friends and their wives give them a listen. Bottom line- the T-Amp was chosen over the most...

    What makes a tonearm "good"??!!!!!!!!

While many of the mentioned items help determine a quality tonearm and affect pricing, it is the quality of the music reproduction that leads to a consensus of opinion on what are good (better, best, greatest) tonearms. And, of course, your individual preferences on the sound would affect...

    .17 HMR questions

If rabbits are the largest "varmint" you would be going for, I'm sure the .17 would suit you well. I don't know how it would do against groundhogs, I'm a bit old school, prefer the 22 cals for varmints (of course, may be a bit too old school, as I use a .222), and can't get my mind around...

I'm Curious... Tell Me About The Soundcraftsmen MA5002 Amp

I owned a Soundscraftsmen amp, but don't remember the model (hey, I'm old, OK?). Please be aware that the following in just my opinion and taste. I did not care for the sound. To me, it was sterile and lifeless. I also had several reliability issues in a short time frame. Needless to say, it...

    Friggin' playback problems

Sorry for the late answer, been out of town. I don't expect it to be a major problem. I am just now getting settled in my current abode, and I got frustrated with my inability to locate items that used to be located together in one convenient place. I just wanted some alone time with my...

    Friggin' playback problems

After having to do without for the last several years, decided I was going to to fire up my big system tonight and spin some records. Got the table all nice and level- had to use a 24" level, as I couldn't find my smaller one right off. Hmm, where is that digital tracking force gage? After aa...

Grinding Coffee - What turns your crank?

I use a Cuisinart burr grinder. The problem I found with the blade types wasn't heat, but an uneven grind. Left too much powder for a press. The burr grinder gives a nice, even grind.

Sticky gumk on the stylus, cartridge

The sticky gunk may be the residue from past "record care" products, some of which are quite hard to remove. Tars from a smoke filled environment also can cause an almost unbelievable amount of gunk on a stylus. Unfortunately hard to remove with products safe for vinyl.

Do you wash brand new "sealed" records?

Always. The mold release seems to attract and hold various bits of dust, ground vinyl, and the records seem to hold a static charge. Besides not wanting my stylus to get coated with anything that may be on the record, I also don't want my first play to embed anything into the (hopefully)...

In my position, which $500-$800 cartridge would you buy?

Now now Grumpy- don't be dissin' my cart!!! The problem with recommending cartridges is they are so system dependent. Mr. Grumpy and I couldn't get decent sound from the 20XH in several systems, yet the same cart sounds quite nice on a Rega P-25 through a Black Cube. I am a Benz fan...

    Jay Turser Guitars, anyone?

I picked up a Turser Strat copy 6 or so years ago. Brand new, it came set-up better than I would have believed. Really like its playability, sold my other two (way more expensive) guitars and kept the Turser. Tone's not the greatest, seems lightweight, but it fits me. YMMV

    Battery powered phonostages - Why?

Sir, you're obviously not seeing the big picture. The speakers have already made use of the fresh, excited electrons and got all the energy they had. Doesn't matter that the tired, worn out little things have to trudge back to the amp uphill, they're just going back to rest so we can get more...

    Vintage vs. New turntables

Just my opinion here... I am a Rega fan, but I would pick the SL-1200 direct drive over any of the lower tables listed. Didn't care for the ones I heard, but I did not have them in my system. Need the listed manufacturers' mid-line and above to have an advantage over the Technics. I know you...
