Is Home Theater On Its Way Out?

You can do some research on www.accessories4less.com. They show pics of the back of all the receivers. They also have some refurbed pre-pros for sale as well. I'm partial to Yamaha, I have had very good luck with the brand. Onkyo/Integra - not so much. Denon and Marantz have been good to me as...

Is Home Theater On Its Way Out?

I know you aren't looking for a receiver, but you may want to rethink that. I've had pre-pros from Onkyo, Integra, Yamaha, and Marantz. I've also had TOTL receivers from all of those brands, along with Denon. I've found little to no difference in sound quality between using the preamp outs from...

    Home theatre system

My last HT setup was pretty decent. I used Klipsch Reference Premier for the front 3, and Emotiva ERD-1 dedicated surrounds for a 5.2 setup. Subs were SVS PB2000 and more than enough to shake the whole house. Yamaha RX-A2070 AVR drove the setup. This was separate from my 2 channel setup but in...

    What's your ringtone?

Been using a clip from "Kill Bill" for many years now. Specifically the scene where the one-eyed 'nurse' (Daryl Hannah) comes waltzing down the hall in the hospital looking to do in Uma Thurman. Gets my attention over the typical noises of the day!

If you could only take three with you?

For boondocking I would think a T-amp might be a better choice. Works on 12v if you get the right one. I have a little Fosi bluetooth amp that works ok, but I wouldn't want to be powering speakers with that for long. I have an old cell phone that I stuck a 128gb memory card into, with lots of...

    1979 Sansui Au-717 / TU-717

Easier than you think, Lee. I did my own binding post install. I think anyone with a soldering iron and some 3d printed speaker panels could do it as well. Between my AU-717 and AU-317 I spent about $100, and they look like they should have been on these amps from the factory. The 317 was easier...

USN for $91 per month as a seaman apprentice. I was one day + 17 years old, that was 1964.

Bridged power amps, why such a dramatic change in sound quality?

I'll hazard a guess: Twice the class a power from your amps? At some point your amps switch out of class a into class b, but now you have twice the power in class a, which would benefit lower volumes according to a theory or three.

Anyone else keep getting logged out?

I updated my log in link using the HTTPS - still shows website to be non-secure. Never seen this problem prior to updating the server several weeks ago. We shall see if I still have to log back in several times per day. That too wasn't a problem before the server upgrade.

    Sansui AU317/217/117 "Less is more"

This thread has been a great read. It's nice to know that the low and middle end gear can sound as big and bold as the TOTL stuff. Just keep the volume at a reasonable level. I have a 317 and a 717, both fully recapped and other various things replaced as needed. When I bought the 317 it was...

    2000a

The 50wpc amp is only capable of increasing the volume by ~2db over the 30wpc amp. Doubling of power produces only 3db more volume. It's a logarithmic scale, not linear. With highly efficient speakers of 95db or more, the 30wpc amp will make your ears bleed.

2-channel receiver/amps vs audio video receivers ,your opinion

I've had 3 AVR's that sounded decent in 2 channel mode, two were Yamaha. First one was the almost TOTL RX-V3900, and more recently the RX-A2070. The other was an HK AVR 525 I bought around 2002(?).

    1990's 5.1 surround VS today's reveivers

In 'the old days' published power specs were regulated by the FTC, and those specs are still regulated by the FTC, and by the same rules. Those rules are outdated for multi-channel amps and receivers since they were written with 2 channel amps and receivers. If you read the specs on a modern 5...

Sound not working properly from Ubuntu to Marantz 9.2 processor -

I have the same video card (eVga) with Linux Mint 20.2. I've used this card with various flavors of Linux and never could get 5.1 sound from the card into my Yamaha RX-A2070 or Oppo 103 player. I ended up burning movies I wanted to watch to a blueray RW disc so I could get surround sound...

Why are towers so often just 2-way designs?

If you ever have the opportunity to listen to Salk Song Towers, do it. They are a tower 2 way with a quarter (1/4th) wave transmission line cabinet. I owned a pair until last Nov when I sold them. I had them for about 7 years. I never felt the need for a sub, but did try to integrate one a few...

    Subwoofer question for this dummy

I would connect the AVR's LFE out jack to the sub's left RCA input, and feed the preamp out from your 2 channel amp into the R right input on the sub. Should work, but don't have both powered up at the same time. You have two sets of RCA jacks on the sub, the top two are inputs, the bottom ones...
