    Doc Watson's Studio

So how much of this equipment in legendary guitarist's Doc Watson home studio can you identify? Pictures by guitar maker Wayne Henderson (from his Facebook page)?

    What type capacitors are these?

So why would they use these instead of the ubiquitous (and presumably cheaper) grey Elna's that I have been replaceing?

    What type capacitors are these?

I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, but I can't seem to find it despite searching. These came out of a Kenwood KW-44 receiver, but I have seen similar ones in other units. Thanks.

    Sansui 500 vs. 500A dimensions?

I posted this question on the Tube forum but got no response, so I thought I would try here. Weird question I know, does anyone know if these are the same size? Specifically, if the top cover of a 500a will fit a 500? Thanks,

    Kenwood KW-44 caps question

Another oddity, since no schematic seems to exist for these, I collected the Trio recommended W-38 one (which uses a tube rectifier) and a KW-33 one (which has a solid state rectifier). Both use 6BM8 outputs & are pretty similar. Both show a 0.02 mfd cap across the power line coming in. Mine...

    Kenwood KW-44 caps question

What about these rectifiers, should they be replaced, and if so, will standard 1N4007 diode work ok?

Sherwood S-5000 to HK Citation V?

As a fellow boater, it might be worthwhile to remember that smaller, simpler boats get used more :). That being said, the Citation has a massive reputation. If you want it as a collector, and can afford it, get it. I love my Sherwood (same general variant as yours), but I also have a Fisher...

    Kenwood KW-44 caps question

I see a number on Mouser too, radials that are 1" diameter. Some are labeled "Low Impedance", would that hurt. That's a lot of rippler current, most are not rated that high. I will have to dig into the spec sheets.

    Kenwood KW-44 caps question

CE makes a 4 X40 and a 4 X 50 at 350 volts in the correct form factor, I'll probably go that route even though it is expensive. The two 100 mfd's are more problematic, 1" diameter. I found some JJ's that are 7/8" diameter so far they are the closest but I will look more this weekend. It...

    Kenwood KW-44 caps question

Thanks. Did you keep the same values (100 mfd, 40 mfd) or go larger? Also, all the .05 mfd film caps, did you use .047's or go up to .056 or .068 (or larger)?

    Kenwood KW-44 caps question

So this is a Japanese Trio-built unit, and it has the usual plethora of grey Elna and JCP(?) caps. It also has 2 100 mfd Nichicon cans that I think might be replacements. The multipart can cap (40 mfd X4) also looks like a replacement, with a clamp mounting. Obviously the Elna's & JCP's need...

    Kenwood KW-44 questons

Going to look at one of these available locally. My searches for a schematics, etc. have not been successful. A previous thread here mentioned that it was the same/similar to the Trio W-38, but the layouts look different & the Trio has more tubes (19 vs. 16 for the Kenwood). Does anyone have...

    Grommes 502/502M/5002/5002M, etc.

Can anyone point me toward some info that shows the differences between these somewhat-similarly numbered receivers? Google just takes me to ebay where these (and others) are for sale, and searching here doesn't get me much farther. Thanks.

Which to use with a turntable?

I do own these, hence the list. It is physically difficult to get these heavy amps in & out of the space, especially since our house is a construction zone right now with boxes everywhere, and I have to back fill whatever I rotate in. Eventually I will try them all I'm sure.

Which to use with a turntable?

In "stock" recapped & such form, which of these is likely to sound best through the phono section. Disclaimer: I am just getting back into using a turntable so none of these were selected because of their phono section, I know there are better choices out there. Pilot 240 "Curtain of Sound"...

Favorite top 3 vintage tube integrated amplifiers

Another vote for the Sherwood S-5000 (early EL-84 version) Sherwood S-5500 also very good sound At a lower price point Pilot 240 The Scott amps also sound very good, some versions of the 222 especially.

    Polarity of can capacitors?

Is there anyway to verify that a can capacitor (single section or multisection) is installed negative ground, without a schematic? This is a Pilot 380 tuners, a 3 section filter cap and a second single section cap that am not sure. The single can has a "-" after the "VDC-" on the labeling...

    Pilot 380 tuner

Thanks. So far the 635m isn't much easier. The 380 was the "higher" of the tuners so I was guessing that one.

    Pilot 380 tuner

Merry Christmas! I am plenty patient, hoping once Christmas is done that someone will chime in. I did buy the unit, it was not as nice as advertised but the price was adjusted accordingly. So far still haven't found a schematic or service manual (which with a tuner I will probably need). Thanks.

    Pilot 380 tuner

Have a chance to pick one of these up at a decent price. This would be to pair with a Pilot 240 integrated amp.Not a lot of info on the web about it, appears to be the "better" of the 2 tuners Pilot offered at the time. Thoughts? Anyone have a service manual, SAMS or schematic for these? Thanks.

    Pilot Receivers, Tuners, and Hybrids

Thanks. I did do a search on AK, did not get that catalog though. Also the third link comes up empty (not dead, just no results found). The the 1962 catalog should keep me busy for a while though.
