    Consoles - a hot commodity in 1961

I had an unexpected, interesting conversation with my parents as I was driving them down State Street in downtown Chicago for my father to see a specialist at one of the big hospitals. Mom - "Remember driving through here when we were looking for a stereo?" Dad - "Yeah, we spent all day...

    generic hole shrinker

I finally do a cosmetically decent job drilling/ punching a chassis, and one of the last things I do, I use a 15/16" hole saw instead of an 11/16" for a stupid, non-necessary indicator light. I have a lens that will fit the hole but the flange interferes with one of the IEC mounting screws. Drat.

    Arcing 5U4GB

On power up, I was greeted by a THUUUH-THUH-THUH-THUMP of the 5U4GB rectifier tube in the right side amp arcing over, then silence. Uh oh. Blown fuse. WHEW! Replaced, brought it up slowly on a varicac; no arcing, but drawing too much current. OK, time to stop procrastinating and swap out the...

Built in bias meters - switching?

Several years ago, I picked up four big, gorgeous NOS Weston 0-100mA DC ammeters, complete with shunts. Have been saving them for a big project. So, I'm building my big project, PP 300b monoblocks with individual fixed bias; AC on the filaments. What is best practice for switching these...

Hickok 6000A - DIY adapter for 4,5,6,7 pin sockets?

Anybody ever built one? I have read posts here and elsewhere that making one would not be difficult - make cord with an octal plug and connect pins 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc. Is that correct? For years, I have been getting by with a combination of a bench-top cabinet Hickok 532 for old tubes and...

Parks Audio "Budgie" Cinemag SUT DIY board - anybody try it?

both the board and an assembled version are available; the assembled version with the 3440A is cheap enough, but I thought I might try the 3440AH or even the 1254 with it. looks like a pretty easy assembly; I do lots of DIY stuff, but these Cinemags seem to give some people fits. If the board...

    Jensen P12PS - do I have a re-cone, or a whizzer-ectomy?

pulled out of a ratty Pilot console; I have read that the "S" cone should have a whizzer, but this cone does not, just piece of black felt over the voice coil cone code is 3012B18-H1; is that a Jensen cone? If it is a re-cone, the dust pattern on the driver tells me it has been there a long...

Dynaco A430 project; what KT88 operating point?

Over the years, I have collected a lot of odds ‘n ends (aka junk to the Mrs), and I find I have nearly everything I need for a nice stereo KT88 project. I have the A430’s, and I’m not limited by the Mk2/Mk3’s P-782, can cap, or chassis real estate. I have iron for an LCLC supply with ample...
