I also used a variac in a similar situation. For your EQ, a step-down transformer need not be big and bulky, as might be necessary for a power amp. Smaller ones seem to start at about $43 on ebay.
When I compared a couple of DACs and a couple of CD/SACD players, the main differences I heard were in brightness, and to my ears, those were not small differences. My favorite, and the closest to my vinyl in sound, was the darkest, my Marantz SACD player. Some may even think it rolled off, but...
Nothing wrong with new stuff.
Nothing wrong with "drive it 'til it drops" either.
The approaches can be combined. :)
If you want to lighten your load, I think now would be the time, though. While it's still working, as you said, and while people who want it are still around.
^^^ This. We need the diagnostic.
If your problem is a low-frequency resonance of the stairwell space, the open door should cure it.
Various gates or screens could keep the cats out, if it works.
I've read this kind of bunk since the late seventies. Whatever validity it has or does not have, fans of the stereo illusion are best off with stereo bass, as the difference is apparent and satisfying.
I disagree.
SSDD, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Do you suppose a Go-Fund-Me appeal to re-tip my mashed SPU would work? Would I get in trouble if I upgraded to a line-contact from the original elliptical?

I am assuming they are now yours to sell. It would seem a fair trade for the work removing them. I think the time to do so would be now.
While I admire the fix-it ethos, I think they should have been listened to all this time. You would have no fond memories of each repair, but I can understand...
I agree with the statement that the round log walls will be great for diffusion. I think 150 people will provide plenty of absorption. If the floor in front of the speakers is going to remain empty of people, I would consider bringing a pair of rugs to lessen the first floor reflection, but try...
I purchased my Marantz table about a dozen years ago from MusicDirect.
My top pulley (for 45 rpm) measures 44 mm across.
My motor was replaced under warranty; this is the replacement one.
Neither motor had anything besides a simple plug at the end of the cord - no wall wart or device. I...
AC synchronous motors have been used with belt drive turntables since the days of 78 rpm records, at least. Line frequency is considered much more stable than line voltage.
Yes, that would be the one. It would be for the Quad ESLs, since I've had such poor luck with tube power amps on them, through no fault of the speakers, that I can tell.
FWIW, I've read of people saying it goes just as loud as their 100w amps, and I believe them. OTOH, I'm one who was satisfied...
When my father had ears his cleaned as a younger man, he told me he was surprised to hear leaves rustling in the trees that he couldn't hear before.
I should probably do the same. My wife's audiologist said consonants are the first to go, and I'm starting to notice some of that. Since I've...
Actually the brifters (brake levers plus shift levers) are brand new MicroNew 3x7 (a MicroShift clone). Front and rear derailleurs are new Shimano Tourneys.
Eventually I'll have a handlebar mounted bottle, and I've got a pair of nice alloy bolt-on clamps to mount another cage on the down tube...
The Velo-Orange tape has a central strip of stickum, like Cinelli cork tape, and is wider than the Tressostar. It doesn't stick nearly as well, and two rolls are needed for each bar half, unless your bars are narrower than mine. A couple feet was left over from each when done that way. To me...
