What speakers are good for low volume listening?

If you'd like something with usable bass output down to 30hz then the Tekton Design Lore would surely fit the bill and be well below your budget. Just about any Tekton model would. http://www.tektondesign.com/lore.html

Good to see that everyone is enjoying their Tektons so far. I still have no desire to get rid of my Lores, although the new Enzo XL looks pretty tempting... good thing I can't afford them. Just as the Devore O/96's look tempting.. all I know is that $1100 got me an awful lot of speaker. Eric is...

Soooooo, it's new system shopping time! ($2k or less please)

I can't imagine finding an amp that sounds better than the GSG within that budget.

I would assume that if you wanted to buy them for a home theater setup, you would purchase the matching speakers. Lore Theater http://www.tektondesign.com/loretheater.html Mini Lore Theater http://www.tektondesign.com/miniloretheater.html etc.

My Lores sounded great right out of the box.. not sure I really noticed a real difference since. Most new speakers I have noticed a difference but not the Lores.

I thought the same but then I also thought I read somewhere that they had a special crossover design.. I don't know anything about building crossovers so I wouldn't know what works by looking at it but whatever he has in there works well since they are a great sounding speaker and the drivers...

To be fair, the first pair showed up in mint shape. They didn't start to split until a week or two in I think.. I noticed one, one day while admiring them, then I noticed the next while playing a nice recording of the 1812 Overture with reall cannon shots and was watching the woofer excursion...

I've had them for a few months. Still love them. Mine had a minor cosmetic issue.. the cabinets started to split at the seams in a few spots. Possibly due to humidity over the summer and the glue not being 100% dry. Eric sent me replacements and when I got them there was a minor defect in one of...

We still have Audio Etc. and Take Five Audio in New Haven and The Audio Store in Newington, I believe.

So, I scored these JBL L26's...

I'm slowly working on a pair of L26's as well, got them for $10 at a tag sale. A few weeks after I picked up a pair of L16 at a Goodwill for $5, gonna use the tweeters from them.

My Lores sounded great right out of the box. I'm not sure they've made a drastic change since. I've just played music through them for hours at a time, sometimes various levels but most of my listening is sorta low volume. Just enjoy the music I say.

I'm sure you will love them but, if you don't.. there is always the return option. I'm sure you won't be needing to use it though.

Well, with the 30 day trial period I'm sure you could purchase a pair of M-Lores if you wanted and if they left you wanting more, you could return them and get the Lore-S instead. Like I've mentioned, the Tektons do it all.. from solo harp, to small vocal arrangements, jazz, soft rock, hard...

The Lore-S would have a more refined sound. Cleaner, smoother, more detail, maybe better imaging, etc.. I'm not sure how drastic of a difference you would notice. It would lose some efficiency and dynamics over the other versions with their pro audio drivers. The Lore-S uses Seas hi-fi drivers...

I could tell they wouldn't be any good by the tweeter.. tweeters like that are never any good.

    Tube Amp Kit

Not that I know of. Within the same price range I was looking at the Transcendars, Edcors, and James outputs. I was going to go with the Edcors but didn't really want to paint them and I noticed that their outputs only had a rated frequency response down to 40hz and the Transcendars were more...

Eric actually seemed disappointed when I told him I'd be using my Lores with a 3watt SET. He said that I would want to get some more power behind them. For now I don't have much interest in more power but I'm planning on building a 50w solid state amp in the near future, so we'll see how that...

    Tube Amp Kit

That's what I did, bought the board with parts and a PA-774 transformer from Triode USA . Got the Transcendar outputs on eBay. Tubes from Tube Depot. Most of the other stuff from Mouser and local places.

There is a Budgie Preamp which can built with or without a remote control unit with tone controls and line switching. It's one of the next projects I'd like to take on when funds allow. http://www.diytube.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=6207

    Tube Amp Kit

Parks Audio has some nice designs. I built the Get.Set.Go (GSG) SET amp. The only thing about his kits are that they aren't really kits. You have to buy everything separately but it's also a good thing since you can choose what parts you want to use for yours. http://www.parksaudiollc.com/...
