It will default to tuner upon starting if you use the power button on the preamp to turn it off/on. It will stay on its last input, if you turn it off with the remote control.

Never heard the soundcraftsmen, but I have a Carver C1. It is modded with "BillD" mods (easily found via google). It is very good with the mods! Drives every amp I throw at it with ease.

I concur. I have two pairs. The 140's aren't too demanding on amps. I would suggest opening them up and checking the woofer surrounds. I'd bet that they need to be refoamed now, or in the very near future (if they've never been refoamed).
