It is a tubed unit. Take a look at the amplifier inside and confirm the model number. I would guess you have a 93XX series based on the looks of the console and tuner. There are many threads here on AK about using older tubed Magnavox amplifiers as stand alone amps.

I have an A-S500 and have used several phono stages. Frankly, they all sounded the same to me. The only upgrade I would look to is something with adjustable gain (Clear audio nano or other). I currently use a DB systems phono preamp with +43 DB of gain, mostly because I have it.

Agreed. I have been running my AS-500 daily for 5 years and still enjoy it. Tons of inputs and no coloration. That is all I want from an amp.

That is decent, I would say $250-300 is the right range. I own 2, I paid $300 and $250 (return at store).
