2013 Shelby GT-500 gets 650 Hp & 600 lb/ft torque!

an amazing car, but needing a 3 mile straightaway after a 190MPH head start (drivers words) seems like a "why bother" goal. Let's just say it's the fastest muscle car on the planet with top speed nearing 200 MPH. That's enough to keep anyone with a heartbeat (pun intended) at attention. :smoke:

I think it's safe to say its top speed is 202 mph, as that's what it achieved at an ISO certified track (Nardo in Italy... which is a big circle you NEVER have to touch the brakes on, well below 2000 feet above sea level).

Having driven on a public road at 3/4 that speed, I'll say... no thank you.

"This car is just yawning at 150 mph...it's not working at all," says Pobst, excitedly. "It's not hard to drive the car; it's a combination of the speed and the unknown. It's a new territory that I don't normally deal with -- this car, this track."

"Also, [the GT500 is] utterly stable on the banking and coming through [the straight]...the balance is perfect. Just a wee bit of understeer at 190 on the banking. Ha. I don't think they test them [at that speed.] I mean, how many opportunities do you have to go that fast?"

Some info about the high speed test sight:

The Arizona Proving Ground

http://www.chryslertestservices.com/services/apg-list.html

The high speed oval provides for performance testing, fuel economy testing, acceleration and braking. Main features of the five mile oval include three lanes and two 1 mile long straight a-way’s. So if you leave the turn at 191 MPH you are traveling one mile every 18 seconds, the driver (Randy Probst) said he braked on entry to the banked turns so it’s likely he’s only on the throttle for 12-15 seconds before setting up for the next turn. Even a mile long straight a-way must seem short at that speed.

years back when they opened the track in Las Vegas, speeds were near 240 in the Indy car class. The drivers were complaining that at those speeds you were traveling too fast to stop by the time you saw something. Those cars are much lighter and stop better than any legal road car. I would think 200 in the Mustang would also be a problem.
Almost a football field a second. Scary.

Video: 2013 GT500 Gets Tuned By John Lund

Evolution Performance brought their shop car to John Lund of Lund Racing. Lund tuned the 2013 Shelby, and was able to eek out even more horsepower with a custom engine tune. So what kind of magic was Lund able to work? After what we assume was a stock first run that put down 605 wheel horsepower and 584 ft-lbs of torque. After Lund’s tune, the same car made 655 wheel horsepower and 633 ft-lbs of torque, a gain of 50 horsepower and 49 ft-lbs of torque. And that is with just a tune. Wait until these guys start getting into the engine…

It must be like water torture to the ZL1 fans. Drip. Drip. Drip.

"But what about the 'Ring!?!"

It seems that Ford has intentionally been controlling the pace of the information release to maximize impact, and its working to perfection. Not sure if they (Ford) will be releasing a ring number, but it’s possible they are saving that as a coup de gras.

That's what Chevy gets for letting Al Oppenheiser spout off about how the ZL1 was going to be superior to the GT500 in every way. He must be a Marketing/Brand Manager first and foremost.
