2270 vs 2275 sound difference

Hi

I know there were some posts, I searched here and googled but read very inconsistent info about it.

My educated guess is that 2270 that I own (recapped) sounds more woolly and mellow as it has a lot of middle bass. I am looking for something a bit crispier clearer sounding within Marantz 1970's line, around 60-80W and not to rare to find or too expensive, so 2275 would do maybe?

But someone here said 2270 sounds more natural and 2275 adds colour . Some said 2275 is more natural and flat as it has tone defeat. But what does natural mean? Some said it's almost the same sound, some that 2275 sounds less vintage, 2270 more tube like o_O

I have Yamaha CR-1000 and it sounds crispier and clearer with less middle bass but more low bass. "Clearer" is what my friends say too totally unprompted about the Yamaha when I present them both receivers, they notice more low bass of Yamaha too. And they are not audiophiles or vintage heads so should be believed. One owner of Arcam A29 said 2270 sounds close to his Arcam and he bought the Yamaha from me :) (I still have 2 of this Yamaha model :) and 3x 2270 :)

But it's about 2270 vs 2275 and NOT vs Yamaha CR-1000

To not trust the ears only I will look and compare the tone boards of both, or maybe somebody did it already? :) I know there are bigger caps on phono board of 2275 but I don't use phono anyway.

Thanks for your comments

I think I have it

My presumptions seem correct now, 2275 would be less warm with less middle bass and more clarity most people tend to confirm.
And the tone of 2275 is a different kettle of fish to 2270's

I have both, and my ear is not very refined, so I have difficulty with descriptions of sounds. All I can say is my ears "like" the sound of the 2275 better. Possibly less warm? Both are fantastic and I wouldn't part with either one.

i have both and both are recapped the 2270 is warmer to me the 2275 more detailed, i prefer to listen to vinyl on the 2270 over the 2275 but thats not to say that vinyl doesnt sound good on the 2275 because it does. sound wise im more of a tube guy so i like warmer better. the 2275 is my go to receiver for CDs though its outstanding.

Chris, in your footer, is it all the gear you have?

Most not all there is a limit to how many letters/numbers you can use in your signature. I dont have room for my turntables (12) cartridges or pre amps. But yes it is my current working gear. I really need to sell some :)

So which receiver is your favourite and which would you rather get rid of today?

Which Marantz is best to you, 2275/2270? What about 19 or 2325? Is 2325 just more powerful version of 2275 as it looks? I read 2285B is even warmer/softer than 2270.
What about Pioneer SX, Yamaha CR-2020?
Sansui 9090 has some ICs in amp/preamp that keeps me away. I believe in discrete designs. Also I noticed that all amps I liked had high damping factor for vintage gear, 60-70.

I am looking for something that would compete with Yamaha CR-1000 which is to my ears the best thing I had so far. Soon will have CA-1000 II and CR-800 too. I suppose the next Yamaha series, like CR-2020 is softer sounding.

Having had both the 2270 and 2275 while great receivers the 2285 surpassed them in all areas in my opinion. More modern sound with crisper cleaner highs and bass you could really feel.

All were recapped and that made a big difference especially with the 2270.

Great receivers though, all of them.

My 2245 is my favorite receiver, probably because it was my first receiver and ive had it over 40 years, the 2270 is the big brother of the 2245 and pretty much the same build and sound with more power. the Model 18 is my second favorite followed by the 2325 (my go to when i want to blow the roof of with some AC DC ) i dont know if the 2325 and 2275 are the same build but i would say their sound is not that different to me, my next is probably the 2285B. Any of my other receivers with the exception of the Fisher 500C which is a tube receiver i could sell today with no remorse.

i dont think the 2285B is warmer than the 2270 but it sure sounds and looks damn good

Speaker choice has slot to do with it too. I have heard most of the Marantz flavors out there and yes the general concensus is that the 2245/2270 is warmer and 2220/2230 even warmer yet (very euphonic once restored), the 2270 can provide excellent detail and resolution without sounding overly "wooly" or warm (once recapped) with the right speakers. I just finished up restoring a 2245 and have been listening to it completed for a few days now and when I use my ADS L780 speakers it's like the best of both worlds detail and warmth, like a good tube amp would sound, but when I connect my Celestion A1's it's much warmer and a bit veiled. My 2220 and a 2240B I was working on a while ago was the same way. I imagine klipsch would give you the same result too. But these are just my ears. YMMV. Both excellent receivers no matter how you look at it :)

I'm with you, Chris. Each one has it's own personality and it's hard to pick a favorite - just like kids. A 2245 was my second Marantz (after my 2230 was stolen in 1972). Due to my short sightedness, I no longer have that unit, but I have two other 2245's that I have recapped. There is something about the sweet spot of sound/power in the 2245 that is just right. One of my recapped units is going to my daughter after she completes a move. As for the rest of your collection -- just color me green with envy.

i like the 18 better its warmer and richer sounding to me with awesome sound stage, the 19 is very detailed and clean sounding to me and a very very good receiver and a lot of people consider it the best marantz receiver but not everybody likes and hears the same things. both of mine are recapped the 18 when i got it back was a jaw dropping WOW moment because it had sounded so good before that it was already one of my favorites and then it went to another level.

Chris, when I bought my 2325, the guy had a Model 18 that he was selling. It worked and he was about as proud of it as he was the 2325. I went for the power and after recap, the 2325 now my daily driver. I know they are very different receivers, but if you could only have one, which one would you pick?

i would keep the 18 over the 2325 and the 2245 over the 18 , the 2245 you will need to pry from my cold dead hands

Haha.. Interesting. I have never heard a Model 18 - or any Marantz preceding the 2230, so have no frame of reference. But I do get the 2245 love.
