3 Strikes for My CD Players?

On fluorescent displays a dim display is almost always caused by a bad solder joint on the -30V supply. You should be able to measure -24V to -30V from either of the end pins of the display to ground. If that is ok, then measure between the 2 end pins with your meter on AC. You should see about 5VAC. Thats the filament voltage. I don't think i've ever seen a bad fluorescent display.
If it's an LCD display you need a new backlight bulb.
On a Technics player skipping is caused by the machined rods the laser slides on needing cleaned and lubed. Clean them with q tips and alcohol, moving the laser back and forth to clean inside the bearings, Allow to dry and put 2 -3 drops of Tri-Flow on both rods on both sides of the laser.

No control function could be caused by using another remote in the area and loading bogus commands into the microprocessor. Most well designed units will ignore "foreign" commands but some will just lose their minds until the memory is reset, like by leaving it unplugged for months.
